Replay: Peter Mulholland Cup Round 1 - Farrer MAHS v Hunter Sports

Three tries in the opening 10 minutes set the scene for a thrilling Peter Mulholland Cup win by Hunter Sports High School over hosts Farrer MAHS on Wednesday.

Farrer were on the backfoot early, conceding 14 points before the crowd even had time to settle in.

But they regrouped and nearly pulled off what would have been a magnificent victory.

Fullback Connor Votano planted two excellent tries for Hunter, but their inability to kick goals nearly came back to haunt them.

Farrer skipper Logan Spinks put his side back in the contest just before the half, ploughing through the Hunter defence like a freight train and converting his own try to cut down the deficit to 14-6.

The second half was tense for the home team, as they desperately tried to claw their way back into the game.

As students filed out off the stands back to class, Sam Archer stormed down the wing to plant a second try for Farrer, with Spinks conversion putting them within two points of Hunter.

Unfortunately Farrer couldn’t find another opening, with Hunter claiming the win 14-12 to kick-off their Peter Mulholland Cup campaign.

PREVIEW

The final two teams kick off their Peter Mulholland Cup campaign on Wednesday, with Hunter Sports High School travelling to hostile territory to take on Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School for their round one clash.

Hunter coach Tony Gleeson said he is ‘reasonably confident’ heading into the match, but knows his side will have a battle on their hands against the full-school support of the Tamworth-based side.

“As long as we’re getting 100 per cent effort, we can only see where we go from there,” Gleeson said.

Hunter have played Farrer ‘a fair bit’ in recent University Shield seasons, but coach Gleeson said the schoolboys competition will be a bit different.

“Farrer’s got a really strong tradition out there with putting some really good sides in,” Gleeson said.

“And I know they’ve got a few guys in junior reps systems, so they’re going to be a really strong team.”

Farrer is also expected to send out students to watch the match, which Gleeson said will be a huge boost.

“One of their biggest advantages out there is their supporters,” he said.

Farrer had a tough opener in 2022 against the eventual champions.
Farrer had a tough opener in 2022 against the eventual champions.

“They have a really strong community and they get the whole school out there during the games, so it encourages them and lifts them a fair bit.

“We’re just going to have to play our brand of footy and not let the crowd get to us.”

Despite the disadvantage of playing away from home, Gleeson is confident in his team’s ability to come away with the win.

“We’ve trained pretty consistently together for a few years now, so hopefully we’ll be able to give a really good account.”
