Kiama High School have been crowned Country Cup champions after they outplayed Callaghan College, Jesmond 40-10 in the Country Cup Final of the NRL Schoolboys Trophy.

Trailing 34-0 at half time, Callaghan College actually won the second half 10-6 by claiming consecutive tries in the early minutes of the second half through the impressive efforts of lock forward Asher Thomas and hooker Jack Haylen.

But Kiama put the seal on their win with a four-pointer from lock Hayden Buchanan, his second try of the game.

It was certainly an unexpected start to the second half after Kiama dominated the first 30 minutes, landing six consecutive tries, a trio of which were scored by speedy fullback Wes Pring.

Pring, who was named man of the match, said their win was down to the impressive performances of their forwards who “really stood up.”

It was their relentless efforts in the first half that “set us up for the rest of the match,” said Pring.

Scrum half Caleb Hall also scored for the Wollongong side, as well as five-eighth Cooper Harrison.

It’s Wollongong v Newcastle as Kiama High School and Callaghan College, Jesmond play off in the Country Cup final of the NRL Schoolboys Trophy on Wednesday.

The two schools will battle it out at Carrington Park, Bathurst in what should be a cracking tournament finale - and Kommunity TV will be on hand to show you the match LIVE from 2pm.

The winner will progress through to the Schoolboy Trophy final on September 21 against the victor of the City Cup decider, which will be played next week at Campbelltown Stadium.

Kiama have enjoyed a grerat year thus far.

Rather than focusing on the opposition, Kiama coach Nathan Ford said his boys have been concentrating on their own game as they are ‘blind as to what we’re up against.’

“We’ll be focused on sticking to what we do best, which is move the ball a little bit and play to our strengths on our edges, hopefully play it nice and fast.”

Kiama will boast a full squad to choose from, with Ford highlighting Dylan Egan and Wes Pring as key players to watch.

Despite missing one or two players, Callaghan College coach Joshua Corby was full of confidence and said those playing will be “enough to get the win.”

He pinpointed captain Preston Conn as an important factor, with Corby praising his consistency throughout all the games they’ve played.

Their line-up will also include the vastly improved Elias Kennedy and 16-year-old young gun Jack Haylen, who Corby said has “contributed a lot to the football team to get to where we are.”
