Victoria University face a tall order, but are intent on ‘embracing the challenge’ of the state’s first national schoolboys rugby league quarterfinal appearance. Catch them LIVE at 1.45pm on Wednesday.

Victoria University Secondary College knows their historic appearance in the quarterfinals of the Peter Mulholland Cup will be tough, but the team is intent on making the state proud.

Victoria’s best team, after recently claiming the Storm Cup crown over Hallam, will take on Patrician Brothers, Blacktown in the final eight of the tournament at Lidcombe Oval in Sydney’s west on Wednesday.

It‘s the furthest a Victorian team has progressed in the tournament after they were included in the pool stage for the first time.

“The boys are embracing the challenge,” Victoria University coach Tony Adams said.

“We want to see where we currently sit and they’ll get some real feedback about what that next level looks like.

“We’ve got nothing to lose going up there.

“We’re playing against a quality side but we’ve got to focus on what we do, bring the right attitude, compete hard enough, for as long as we can, and see how we go.

“But it’s certainly going to be a tall order.”

Adam said Patrician Brothers, Blacktown have a strong squad with players either in the Australian Schoolboys team or on the verge of making it.

He expects their opponents to be quite physical, which his team needs to be aware of.

“We’ve got to control the game of the speed, that’s number one,” Adams said.

“We’ve got to make sure our contact is good, as is our controlling of the ruck speed.

“They are a physical side, so we’ve got to make sure we control it as best as we can.

“Otherwise if we are sitting on our heels and those big boys are running at us, we are not going to win the collision very often.”

Vic Uni coach Tony Adams makes a point to his players.

Adams said the start would be the key, making sure the team can get into the contest and not be on the back foot early.

“We want to start well,” he said.

“We want to make sure we complete our sets and get into the game.

“If we go set for set against them, and if we can trade sets early, the boys can get into a rhythm and adjust.”

Adams has a nervous wait on his hands in relation to the squad available to him.

A lot of his players are playing in the semi-finals in Victoria’s rugby league competition just days before the game.

He’s hoping to go in with the same squad who beat Hallam in the final, 16-14, but admits there could be changes coming as players have a short turnaround.

Vic Uni will create history in Sydney on Wednesday.

“We’ll have (roughly) the same side as the grand final but we’ll have to revisit the team come Monday,” he said.

“You’d like to keep them fresh, as it is for a lot of these boys the pinnacle of their career and the highest level they’ll play (in the Cup).”

One player who will return is Denzo Atileo, who is back after missing the Storm Cup final.

“He played super well in the semi-final,” Adam said.

“Hopefully he comes back in reasonable nick.”

Adams added the team was super excited to make history and hopefully will try their best against NSW opposition.
