Westfields put their opening match well and truly behind them as they demolished Endeavour 32-18 in their second round Peter Mulholland Cup clash on Monday.

It didn’t take long for Westfields to put themselves on the scoreboard, with Vaivela finding the try line just 3 minutes in.

Last game’s three-try hero Will Craig followed up with his own soon after, while Sosefo Finau Daniel Waqa added two more for Westfields to have four tries before half-time.

Roy Qurioz-Mapusua only managed to convert two of the four to give Westfields a solid 20-0 lead heading into the second.

The second half was tightly contested, with Endeavour scoring three tries to Westfields’ two, and try-scorer Quiroz-Mapusua said the team seemed to hold back a bit.

“In the second we just went away from what we did really well in the first,” Quiroz-Mapusua said.

“Which was just staying up really well, keeping them back.

“It just wasn’t as good as the first half.”

Endeavour was the first to strike after the break, only taking four minutes to finally get some points on the board courtesy of Laurerri Brady and a simple conversion from Bryde Sait.

It was followed up by Kaden Garner with a stellar try in the corner and Endeavour diminished the lead to 26-12.

However Endeavour couldn’t capitalise on multiple mistakes from Westfields, and their opponents managed to get another converted try in.

Endeavour’s Nikora Williams planted a consolation try right on the siren, but it wasn’t enough and Westfields took the win 32-18.

The win for Westfields sets up a blockbuster final pool match against Hills Sports High School next month, but Quiroz-Mapusua said the boys would treat it like any other game.

“We just need to get back to training,” he said.

“We won’t really focus on Hills until the game comes, but just focus on us”

PREVIEW

Determined to match pacesetters Hills Sports, the pressure will be on Westfields Sports when they take on Endeavour College on Monday at PointsBet Stadium in their second Peter Mulholland Cup clash.

Coach Troy Weeden has been intent on fixing the ‘ill discipline’ his side showed in their 24-18 victory against Patrician Brothers Blacktown back in round one.

“The boys got out of jail a little in the first round,” Weeden said.

Despite their first-up win, coach Weeden has made some crucial changes to his side ahead of Monday’s match, though the injury concerns from the opener, including to try-scorer Will Craig, haven’t become an issue.

“Will is OK, we’re still missing one or two, but they didn’t play the first game,” he said.

“Made a couple of adjustments based on the University Shield game we had in between, so we’ll have a little bit of a different look about us.”

Endeavour began their campaign on the back of 36-16 hiding against Hills.

Hills confirmed that form earlier this week by beating Patrician Brothers, Blacktown 16-12 in a thriller.

Westfields would surely like a repeat of last year’s result when they scored 54 points against Endeavour, but Weeden was more concerned on self-improvement from his players.

He said the main issues they’ve been focusing on in training is their control in attack and strengthening their defence.

“Just brushing up what we do with the ball,” Weeden said.

“We were a bit sloppy, which obviously put pressure on us defensively.”
