Replay: Peter Mulholland Cup Round 1 - Bass High v Holy Cross Ryde

Bass High has put the Peter Mulholland Cup competition on notice following a 60-0 win over Holy Cross, Ryde in their round one clash at Cabramatta on Wednesday.

A hat-trick from 16-year-old Ali Karnib was a highlight for Bass, who looked like they were in for a pointsfest right from the start.

The Bulls pulled out a 16-point lead by the first half, courtesy of tries to Simione Laiafi, Fanafou Seve and Karnib.

But the second half was where the home team really came alive, with tries coming every few minutes as they amassed a 44-point haul.

The Holy Cross defence just couldn’t keep up, crumbling under wave after wave of attacks.

Bulls captain Jahrome Goddard said the mammoth result is testament to the hard work the team put in during the off-season.

“It was a massive scoreline, but it’s all credit to our hard work,” Goddard said.

“We haven’t been too successful in the Schoolboy Cup previously, but to come out here and put in that performance is a great start to our campaign.

Despite the impressive victory, Goddard insisted the team ‘didn’t go into today thinking we’d win.’

“It’s definitely good to perform like that,” Goddard said.

“There were a lot of new combinations for a pretty new team, so it’s a good start.”

Bass will next take on St Gregory’s College, who face St Dominic’s on May 23 in their opening game.

That match, and all others from the Peter Mulholland Cup, will be available to watch LIVE and exclusive on KommunityTV as part of our season-long coverage.

Holy Cross College coach Tim White reckons his new-look side of ‘predominantly year 10 and 11 kids’ won’t go far in this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup.

But the opposition coach in Wednesday’s NSW opener begs to differ ... a lot.

Bass High’s Jon Wilson isn’t buying into the Holy Cross narrative, saying ‘anyone who’s playing in the Schoolboy Cup is formidable opposition’.

With ‘a really young team’, White insisted this year would be more of a learning process for Holy Cross.

“It’s been tough because they’re all new, they only played together as a team for the first time a week ago,” he said.

“I’m just expecting them to compete and stay in the game, and build up as a team for next year.”

Bass High, on the other hand, are a team to be feared, according to White.

“This is apparently the strongest team they’ve had in years, so it’s a bit daunting,” he said.

Wilson, though, hit back, saying White ‘always undersells his side’.

“We won’t be going out there thinking it’ll be an easy game, that’s for sure.”

With Bass, St Gregory’s College and St Dominic’s College all in Holy Cross’ pool, White knows his side have their work cut out for them.

“Those three are all pretty close,” White said.

“I would say St Dominic’s are the favourites of the pool, with St Greg’s and Bass neck and neck.”

Though White’s side for this year may not be championship contenders, he believes the work they’re putting in this season will really benefit in the years to come.

“It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about learning,” White said.

“So hopefully the boys can learn a few things from competing and then next year can be more competitive.”
