Jett Cleary burst out from the shadow of famous older brother Nathan as NSW CCC consolidated their favouritism for the ASSRL title. Relive the action from a big day at Kayo Stadium.

Replay: ASSRL Nationals Day 2 - NSWCCC v CAS (Boys)

Jett Cleary scored two brilliant individual tries within the space of three minutes as NSW CCC stormed over the top of Combined Affiliated States 60-6.

Coming off the bench, the young brother of Penrith champion Nathan Cleary impacted the match to propel his side to a 20-0 lead just 20 minutes into the clash.

Floating around on the right edge, Cleary displayed an explosive turn to speed to thrust through the first line and outlast the cover defence to score a 25m solo try.

Jett Cleary was named man of the match.

He hurled the ball into the air in celebration before being engulfed by his teammates.

Minutes later Cleary then scored his second try, attacking a wide blindside before showing the ball left and right - then going himself to dive over.

It was classy stuff from the young halfback.

NSW CCC let it sing early, using the width of the field to go around the CAS middle defence.

One side and then the other probed the edges, before an expansive left sweep finished in the hands of centre Wilson Decourcey (St Francis Xavier College).

NSW CCC continued to back their skills, with halfback Riley Pollard (St Dominic’s College directing their team around, leading to Jezaiah Funa-iuta (Patrician Brothers College) powering over.

Then came Cleary’s two tries, which were followed by a flying Tom Kirk, who leapt high to bring down a perfectly placed bomb from his halfback, Pollard.

Pollard then got himself on the try-scoring list, backing up bullocking edge backrower Jacob Halangahu, who breached the CAS front line.

Into the second half and NSW CCC’s practice for their finals’ appearance continued, with Lachlan Dooner (St Gregory’s) finding the stripe, and hard working Lachlan Coinakis (Patrician Brothers College) rewarded for his toil with a try.

Down 56-0, CAS never gave up and it was pleasing to see them get on the scoreboard when Micah Warena (Hallam Senior College) crossed.

CAS never stopped hitting in defence, and even late Ivana Tuafuti wrapped himself around the ankles of a bigger opponent to stop him scoring. That was the type of effort CAS produced - it was just NSW CCC were better, much better.

Tuialii master class inspires ACT success

A first-half defensive masterclass from centre Mark Tuialii provided a boost to his ACT teammates as they edged out NSW CIS 22-16 in a gritty contest to close out day two.

The former Queenslander is now honing his skills as Erindale College and it was his left shoulder and right hand offload which gave his side the spark they needed.

Tuialii had his hand in everything as ACT put up a strong first-half performance to lead 6-0 at the break.

In that first 30 minutes, everything he touched turned to gold. five times he made bone rattling tackles and on two occasions they forced an error, and it was momentum changes like these that prevented NSW CIS from striking.

The lone try of the first half was, of course, thanks to a freakish Tuialii offload that sent winger Koko Salim over.

Halfback Jonah Anderson had good touches in this passage, his opposite number Toby Rodwell (Newington College, Stanmore) was also threatening with ball in hand.

Despite strong pushback from Rodwell, fullback Mitchell Woods, hooker Jaxson Allen (Cranbrook School, Bellevue Hill) and prop Patrick Young (St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill), ACT kept firing in the second half to find themselves up 22-0.

Raiders signed Xavier Caccitotti (Erindale College), winger Lachlan Cunanan and second rower Max Mercer found the tryline to diminish NSW CIS’ chances of a late comeback.

Rodwell tried his best at the death, scoring one and assisting on another scored by Allen. A beautiful Woods cut out pass also put winger Tylan Black-Berryman in with two minutes left, but it was too little too late.

SCHOOLGIRLS - DAY TWO

GAME 3

NSW CHS v ACT

NSW CHS continued to gather momentum with a 21-0 win.

They started strongly with three tries across the opening 10 minutes.

Impressive No.13 Aliyah Nasio got the ball rolling, then the NSW forwards combined to engineer their team’s next four pointer.

And when halfback Kasey Reh (Figtree High School) put flee-a-foot winger Maria Paseka (Illawarra Sports High) over in the corner, it was 13-0.

Gun centre Indie Bostock then galloped over for yet another try before plucky ACT were able to stem the tide.

Westfields Sports High School prop Monica Fasavala-Faamausili then completed the scoring with a barge over try from 10m out.

NSWCCC v Victoria

Classy NSW CCC five-eighth Evie McGrath was the link in her team sweeping away from a gutsy Victoria 13-0.

NSW CCC’s driving, united defence also shone against a Victorian side that has not been light years off the pace in the championships.

Elizabeth McGregor scored NSW CCC’s first try, and the Red Bend College fullback was having a fine carnival.

Angele Field then ran with the ball in two hands, waving as if to pass, but backing her running skills before plunging over next to the posts. NSW CCC led 9-0.

A beautifully executed backline movement then ended in the hands of winger Josephine Jeffries (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College) who finished with a sprint and a dive.

NSW CIS v Northern Territory

NSW CIS winger Shanelle Lyons (SEDA College) scored two late tries after her team fought long and hard before pulling away to win 17-4.

It was a battle royale, with the NT girls refusing to take a backward step despite conceding the first try when Jasmine Hocking burst over in the corner.

NT hit back hard and the squad’s reward was to see Aaliyah White (SEDA College, Marrara) plunge over, reducing the scoreline to 5-4 in NSW’s favour.

The NT girls were putting their shoulders into tackles and it took all the strength of NSW CIS middle forward Taya Floyd to widen the margin to 9-nil.

NSW CIS winger Shanelle Lyons (SEDA College) then finished the match in style, bursting clear down the sideline to score her first try, and then coming infield to cross for another.

QRSS v WA

In the final schoolgirls game on day two of the championships, Western Australia threatened to dethrone the unbeaten Queensland team before two late tries saw the home side avoid an upset and come out 9-0 winners.

The game was scoreless until a run from Tavarna Papalii broke the line allowing hooker Nadia Windleborn to cash in with a dive out of dummy-half.

Mabel Park’s Malaela Su’a set up her team’s second try through Ebony Raftstrand Smith.

Western Australia were ruthless with their defence but all Queensland needed was an inch of room and they were in.

GAME 2

NSW Combined HIgh Schools v Victoria

Figtree High School’s Caley Tallon-Henniker staked an early claim for try of the day while centre Indie Bostock was again first class in breaking the game open for NSW CHS.

NSW CHS fullback Tallon-Henniker, a four-try hero, exploded off the mark from 30m out to score her first try on the way to NSW CHS.

She then scorched over for another three long distance tries, having earlier saved what seemed a certain try with last ditch defence. It was some performance.

NSW CCC v ACT

NSW Combined Catholic College centre Evie Jones tilted the match her team’s way 17-0 over ACT.

Forget the scoreline - the ACT were much better than that margin and it took a touch of class from Jones, and direction from talented five-eight Evie McGrath (St Mary Star of the Sea) to point the NSW CCC to victory.

Jones (St Joseph’s High School) brilliantly created the opening try with a blazing midfield burst that was expertly finished by her winger Sienna Leslie (Holy Spirit College).

And then she finished the scoring with a blistering 60m solo try.

- Mercedez Taulelei-Siala (Marsden State High)

- Lenniece Wright (Deception Bay State High School)

- Liliele Vaitolo (Mabel Park State High, Slacks Creek)

- Reegan Hicks (Australian Christian College Moreton, Caboolture)

- Deliah Eliu (Mabel Park SHS)

- Ebony Raftstrand-Smith (Keebra Park SHS)

The Northern Territory schoolgirls were a brave opponent but in 20 minutes they had no more than three attacking sets.

WA v NSWCIS

Last-second heroics from NSW Combined Independent Schools second rower Bronte Ryan (Central Coast Sports College, Kariong) saved her side from losing at the final hooter when making a try-saving tackle on her Western Australian rival.

With neither team yet to score, it was an effort play from the No.11 to sweep from the middle to the left touchline before barging her prey out of play, ensuring a 0-0 draw.

It was an end-to-end thriller which had supporters up on their feet.

Fabulous defence from the ACT girls could not prevent the Vic’s from snaring a brusing victory.

The winners had a big boost in the middle by Monica Fasavala-Faamausili (Bass High School), Manilita Takapautolo (Westfield Sports High) and Aliyah Nasio (Kingswood High School).

The NSWCCC attack could not have been spearheaded better than through the very promising Evie McGrath (St Mary Star of the Sea Wollongong).

Her halves partner Georgie Barrett mastered a crossfield kick on the last play of the game to put Georgie Coote in for a try.

The Seda College, Wembley product was given an offload by second rower Taliana Mika (Byford Secondary College, Byford), who was wrapped up by countless defenders.

Earlier, the brilliance of NT’s first try scorer Cecilia Misob (Essington School, Nightcliff) sent her side up 5-0.

With three minutes to play, hardworking WA lock Topaz Porter (Aranmore Catholic College, Leederville) edged her side within one point before Norton sealed it at the death.

The Sunshine State has been a dominant force in the inaugural schoolgirls national championships, defeating all-comers on Saturday’s opening day to sit atop Pool A.

They will have a chance to continue their run of dominance when the girls championships kicks off the action on day two of the tournament from 9am, Monday. See the full day two schedule below.

KommunityTV will be the only place you can watch the ASSRL Nationals, with our exclusive live stream of every match of the tournament from Kayo Stadium.

The girls will play another blistering three rounds of action, with 20 minute games, to kick start Monday, before NSW Combined Catholic Colleges clash with Combined Affiliated States and NSW Combined Independent Schools battle the ACT to close out the action in the afternoon.

In their 25-point dismantling of NSW CIS on Saturday, the Ipswich State High product scored one try and set up two in a brilliant individual display.

Queensland have racked up an impressive 75 points across their first three games of the nationals, but even better is they haven’t let in a point at the other end of the field.

Victoria will have a chance to avenge several tight losses to start the tournament and score themselves an unlikely finals berth.

The southern side is winless after the first round of action, but showed plenty of willpower losing two of their games, against the ACT and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges, by a lone point.

NSW Combined Catholic Colleges are the other team undefeated after the opening round of girls action on Saturday, and will be determined to pick up where they left off as they aim to cement their spot in Wednesday’s semi-finals.

Their boys’ counterparts will also be determined to finish the regular rounds undefeated at the ASSRL Nationals after springing the upset of the tournament against Queensland in the opener.

The NSW CCC side, which showed plenty of firepower through the middle, will come up against a relatively unknown Combined Affiliated States side.

The CAS team is made up of players from Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory and will be determined to prove the burgeoning rugby league programs in those states are producing the goods.
