Knights’ middle man Myles Martin had a day to remember, scoring four tries in Newcastle’s rampaging 42 to 6 win against South Sydney.

Newcastle’s attack had put on 78 points in the opening two rounds of the season and the side brought that free-flowing form to Redfern’s Ironbank High Performance Centre.

The home side struck first through prop forward William Abou-Arrage in the third minute, but after that it was all the Knights as Myles and co ran riot against the error-ridden Rabbits.

Martin snared his first two tries in the 22nd and 32nd minutes to put the Knights up 12-6 at the break.

Noah Johannssen made an impact off the Newcastle bench with a strong drive through the middle leading to a try in between the sticks with 44 minutes played.

Martin grabbed try number three and four within the next 12 minutes, before coach Adam Bettridge let his lock forward go for an early shower.

The Knights maintained the rage until the full-time whistle with Oryn Keeley and Noah Nailagoliva scoring in the final 10 minutes.

Knights winger Ethan Ferguson couldn’t find the try line, but he still managed 14 points with seven conversions from seven attempts to see Newcastle prevail 42-6.

“I am more happy with the six points against [than the 42 for] and the none in the first game against North Sydney,” Bettridge said after the game.

“We know we need to be good defensively, that’s what we have to be at the Newcastle Knights. The attack will come, we know there’s points in us, but it’s the defense that I am more proud with today.

“Myles is a terrific kid. He’s just come to the club and he is a really good asset for us. [The four tries] is a true reward for his work rate and for what he’s done in the preseason.”

Newcastle return to Sydney in round 4 to face Balmain at Leichhardt Oval, while Souths will look to get win number one of the season against the Bears.

MATCH PREVIEW: FOX LIGHTS UP AT CHANCE TO WATCH JUNIORS

Josh Addo-Carr loves the exposure NRL junior rep players are getting through live streaming of matches and there’s one youngster he can’t wait to watch this weekend - his ‘cousin’ Tyrone Munro.

The Daily Telegraph will be streaming Munro’s match when the Rabbitohs take on Newcastle in the SG Ball at 3pm on Saturday.

“The coverage of the younger ones shows everyone else what type of players are out there,” the two-time premiership winner Addo-Carr said.

“It gives them an opportunity to put their best foot forward, and it gives them a chance to show other clubs what they’re doing.

“I know when I was a young fella I was always looking at my stats and how many runs I made and tries I scored.

“But if it’s going to keep growing the game and making it better, then I’m all for it.”

The bond between Munro and Canterbury recruit Addo-Carr is tight.

And it turns out speed runs in this ‘family’.

Addo-Carr says the up-and-coming Rabbitoh is “like my little brother”.

“I’ve always looked after him and he’s a true talent and I’ve always got his back no matter what,” Addo-Carr said.

“We go way back, I’ve looked after him forever. He reminds me of myself when I was a young fella, willing to work hard, to learn and I think he’s got a bright future.

“He’s quick, too.”

Munro has had a rapid rise since walking in sight unseen to the Rabbitohs’ Harold Matthews Cup trial ahead of the 2021 season.

It’s been a turbulent opening two rounds for the Souths in the SG Ball Cup with the Bunnies yet to register a win despite putting on 48 points.

There will be a reshuffle in the backline for the Newcastle match at Redfern’s Ironmark High Performance Centre with Munro shifting from the wing to fullback.

Not only did the Botany Rams junior make the side, he went on to have a phenomenal year, named the club’s under-17s player of the season, selected in the NSW Combined High

Schools team and earning a contract extension until the end of 2024.

“A few of my mates from club footy played for Souths,” Munro said.

“They played Harold Matts and my coach and my mum encouraged me to go and trial.

“I rocked up and gave it everything, I left nothing in the tank.

“I only rocked up to play a game of footy. My family are all very proud of me, my mum always strives for me to be better and better.”

The Bunnies rookie takes inspiration from the Indigenious All Stars captain, and he also looks up to a couple of his club’s first-grade stars Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker.

“I have known Josh for ages,” Munro said.

“We grew up in the same community and he’s like an older brother to me.

“Obviously I look up to Josh and also Latrell [Mitchell] and Cody [Walker]. Latrell is a beast and Cody just goes out and plays footy.”

The Daily Telegraph’s bumper day of live streaming kicks off with the women’s Tarsha Gale Cup (under-19s) clash between the Knights and Rabbitohs before the clubs meet in the Harold Matthews Cup (under-17s) at 1.30pm.
