Patrician Brothers Blacktown have stunned their PBC rivals Fairfield in a 36-0 Peter Mulholland Cup shutout.

The defensively staunch Blacktown are still yet to concede a point this season, after a crushing 50-0 win over Matraville in the opening round.

Four-try hero Jack Nicholas, who scored three in the final 10 minutes as the Blacktown side blew their rivals away late, aid the scoreline was not a reflection of the contest.

“I definitely thought it was going to be a lot closer,” Nicholas said.

“The score didn’t really depict what the game was. It was a tough game, especially the first 10 minutes of each half.

“But obviously we got the roll on them and got the job done.”

Nicholas refused to accept the praise for his four-try effort, instead pointing the finger at the players inside him like crafty halfback Jhett Sydir and barnstorming backrower Jacob Halangahu for their work.

Halangahu set up two tries for the speedy winger through late offloads, the second producing a brilliant 70 metre sprint down the left touchline.

“My teammates put me in the position to do it,” Nicholas said.

“I’m just feeling very grateful to be playing footy at the moment.”

Blacktown dominated the first half, barely allowing Fairfield any time in their own half while consistently pushing their defence.

Christian Taupau-Moors’ fancy footwork allowed him to slip past the Fairfield backline to secure the opening try of the game before Nicholas squeezed his way under two defenders to score his first.

Five-eighth Jared Hayward worked a short blindside to score a third try for the half and send his side to the break up 14-0.

While Fairfield weren’t afraid to get into the grind with their rivals, and had their own opportunities to strike early in the first half, once Blacktown broke the shackles it was all downhill running.

Rangy forward Josiah Vahaakolo-Fifita added more misery to Fairfield, finding the try line off a slick short ball from hooker Lachlan Coinakis.

Harrison Bull capitalised on a quick play to add another to the scoreboard before Nicholas capped off the night with a brilliant late hat-trick.

PREVIEW

Two schools steeped in tradition and bonded by a shared history and common goal, will finally put it all on the line against each other.

Patrician Brothers College, Fairfield and Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown will meet in the Peter Mulholland Cup for the first time on Wednesday.

In reality, it is the first time the two schools have gone toe-to-toe in a competitive match since the turn of the century.

The clash, which will be played at New Era Park in Cabramatta on Wednesday, will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV at 6pm.

The two schools, who are among five remaining institutions founded by the Patrician Brothers of Sydney, are bound by a shared history and system of beliefs.

“There is still the connection there, the schools do a lot of things together,” PBC Blacktown head of sport Greg Beacroft said.

“Our young leaders go away on leadership camps and leadership days with the young leaders of Fairfield and Holy Cross College. There are not many Patrician Brothers left, but we want that legacy to continue.

“A lot of that connection is probably above the playing group, but they still know a lot of the kids in the other teams. They play representative football against each other and they trial together for state teams.

“We are excited for this opportunity. When you look at the competition this year and the way results have gone, it shows how competitive the schools have become. Whoever wins this match has a good chance at top spot in our pool.”

Fairfield, who began their campaign with a come-from-behind 38-16 win over All Saints Maitland, are up for the challenge, according to assistant coach Josh Morgan.

“It’ll go to a different level,” Morgan said.

“Obviously the Peter Mulholland Cup is the pinnacle of schoolboy footy in the state, and even the country, and, of course, there’s a bit of a rivalry.”

Blacktown, who were beaten by one point by Westfields in last year’s PMC grand final, demolished Matraville Sports High 50-0 in their opener.

Patrician Brothers Blacktown lost last year’s final by one point.

It is certainly enough to have Fairfield on alert and they have done their research.

“You really have to be prepared for everything,” Morgan said.

“They can play off the cuff, they’re tough on the middle and once they get momentum, it’s so hard to stop.

“So, I guess we’ve got to be in a position where we can stop that momentum and catch them off guard.”

Morgan added head coach Frank Pritchard wanted to see improvement from his own boys after they let All Saints get away in the first half of their opening game.

“Obviously there were things to fix after that first game,” Morgan said.

“Primarily in defence and just being able to hold the ball.

“But at the same time, we don’t want to go away shifting our focus completely onto that and ignoring our strengths.

“I guess there’s a fine balance of looking for areas to improve and then just play to what we’re good at and letting the boys take the reins.”
