Replay: Patrician Brothers Blacktown v All Saints Maitland - Peter Mulholland Cup Round 3

Patrician Brothers Blacktown wrapped up their Peter Mulholland Cup Pool B campaign with an unbeaten record after taking apart All Saints Maitland in front of a very loud home crowd.

But although the 52-10 scoreline looks decisive enough, captain Jacob Halangahu said it wasn’t his team’s best match.

“The first half we did everything we wanted to do,” Halangahu said.

“But that second half was a bit scrappy, you know, we let in 10 points with two tries.

“That wasn’t part of what we had planned, but I guess that’s just footy.”

A potential Pats try was waved away early and All Saints stayed strong in defence until a four-pointer from Jack Nicholas in the corner opened the floodgates.

Another seven tries crossed the All Saints line before the end of the half with Chas Riddle, Byron Laupepa, Cameron Bamblett, Roman Tuaimau and Charbel Kheirallah all recording one each, while Nicholas scored his second.

The second half was much more evenly matched, with All Saints’ Cody Beavis putting together one of the most spectacular individual tries of the season, retrieving his own kick as Pats conceded the first points of their season.

Pats only scored three tries in the second half compared to eight in the first, and Halangahu said that needs to be cleaned up before the quarters.

“We didn’t intentionally take our foot off the gas,” he said.

“I think we were just trying to rest a few and put in a few new players, so our structure kind of went out the window.

“We know we can’t take our foot off no matter who we’re against.”

PREVIEW

Blacktown coach Noah Meares is anticipating Maitland to come firing out of the blocks, particularly with their key men in the engine room in top form.

“Our approach won’t change,” he said.

“We’ll be aware of them coming into the game very eager for a win. A few of their stars in Cody Hopwood and Jack Hilliar are coming off strong weeks at the U18s Championships, so it’s shaping up as a good match.”

Patrician Brothers has built their season on the back of its incredible defence, amazingly not conceding a single point through their two pool games so far.

Meares said while their attack has fired on all cylinders, their ability to hold their goal line is what has impressed him the most.

“I certainly am proud of that,” he said.

“In the first game we were a bit dusty ourselves, but to keep Fairfield to nil in front of their home crowd in a night game was a superb effort from the boys. We’ll look to build off the back of that.

“We have a few team principles that we’ve built our season on and we’re getting our defensive principles right, along with the effort areas.

“Having the desperation to not let anyone through our line and continuing to get better, we’re in a good place.”

A testament to the strength of their side, Blacktown had four players chosen in the Australian Schoolboys side, namely Jacob Halangahu, Lachlan Coinakis, Jared Haywood and Tyson Sangalang.

Meares said while that experience will be invaluable for the team, he’s looking for those that missed out to draw motivation from their omissions.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of our middles to really stick it to All Saints,” he said.

“A few were disappointed not to make it, so I’m expecting some big collisions.”
