Rugby league fans will get their first glimpse of the future as the best young talents in the NSWRL pathways system play off for a spot in their respective grand finals.
The Daily Telegraph will be your place to watch the action as we showcase semi-final action in the Tarsha Gale Cup (Under-19s), Harold Matthews Cup (Under-17s) and SG Ball Cup (Under-19s) from Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.
Five of the state’s top clubs will feature on the Telegraph’s exclusive live stream including the Newcastle Knights (SG ball, Tarsha Gale), Penrith Panthers (SG Ball), Canberra Raiders (Harold Matts), Western Suburbs Magpies (Harold Matts) and Parramatta Eels (Tarsha Gale).
They are matches that are all expected to go down to the wire, and it will be up to each side’s key talents to make the difference in Kogarah.
These are the nine rising stars that will be determined to light up our live streams this weekend as they look to push their side through to the grand final.
SG Ball Cup
Myles Martin (Lock) – Newcastle Knights
The Knights pack will be primed for a big one under the Kogarah floodlights and the man holding them all together is tearaway lock Myles Martin.
The mulleted No.13 is a willing hole-runner and has a knack for finding the line with seven tries this season, including four in a demolition job of the Rabbitohs in round 3.
Martin all-action playing style will make him a handful for the Panthers to keep a handle on.
Fletcher Sharpe (Fullback) – Newcastle Knights
The Knights have been the most potent attack in the SG Ball, having scored 266 points which is 14 more than the Panthers who have played an extra game (the elimination final) than the Novocastrians.
Fullback Fletcher Sharpe has been at the heart of that sublime point scoring with the no.1 being in complete sync with his halves and outside backs.
Sharpe has 10 tries this season, including six tries in a 76 to 0 thumping of St George in the penultimate round.
Isaiya Katoa (Halfback) – Penrith Panthers
The No.7 oozes class with the way he goes about his footy and it’s little wonder why the Dolphins have locked up his services from 2023 and beyond.
Katoa was in cruise control as he steered Penrith to a 24 to 6 win against the Steelers in week one of the finals in what was just his second game back from a broken wrist.
The sizable No.7 has an impressive kicking game, but his frame allows him to bustle with the big boys and he’s not afraid to run at the line.
Harold Matthews Cup
Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi (Prop)– Canberra Raiders
Has been a commanding presence for the Raiders this season with his absence noticed when he missed a few weeks with a knee injury.
Canberra’s upset win against the Panthers on Good Friday was built off the foundations laid by the No.8 from Perth who clearly goes to the same barber as the club’s first grade star Josh Papalii.
Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi is a hard runner, capable to making plenty of post-contact metres which makes him a real threat close to the line.
Will Craig (Centre) – Western Suburbs
One of Western Suburbs’ most pivotal players on the way to the side claiming the Harrold Matts minor premiership. Due to an excess of No.1s in the club, Craig has converted from fullback to centre, a move which has seen him flourish with the East Campbelltown Eagles junior picking up three MVPs this season. Craig has a solid defensive game, but he can also turn it on with the ball in hand.
Kit Laulilii (Lock) – Western Suburbs
Kit Laulilii captained Western Suburbs to the minor premiership and will be a key figure if they are to go on and win the comp. Laulilii is an a great leader and an outstanding talent with the skillset required of modern-day lock forwards. The No.13’s footwork and ballplaying ability will keep the Raiders guessing this weekend.
Tarsha Gale Cup
Ruby-Jean Kennard (Prop) - Parramatta Eels
Parramatta prop Ruby-Jean Kennard Ellis is up there with the best front rowers in the competition and is expected to put on a big performance against the Knights on Saturday. The hard-running no. 10 who hails from a talented rugby league family, she is the daughter of former St George hooker Ben Ellis will lead the Blue and Gold as skipper and no doubt be determined to take her side all the way.
Rosemarie Beckett (Halfback) - Parramatta Eels
She’s been described as a “stallion halfback”, Rosemarie Beckett will be chasing her second premiership, only this time in the blue and gold. After winning a grand final with Dragons last season, the 18-year-old Bligh Park half knows that the organisation of her side will be key to running over Newcastle on Saturday.
Jesse Southwell (Five-eighth) - Newcastle Knights
She hits like a prop but has the hands of a playmaker. Knights’ five-eighth Jesse Southwell has had a hand in everything the Novocastrians have done right this season.
The younger sister of Roosters’ NRLW premiership winner, Hannah Southwell, the dynamic no. 6 is more than capable of creating something out of nothing and will be one to watch out for in the blue and red this weekend.
