After two long years off the field, the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League National Championships are back in a big way and KommunityTV will be the only way to watch all of the action.

The event, which was last played in 2019, will return in a rejuvenated format from July 2-8 in Redcliffe, Queensland.

To encourage an alignment with rugby league development at all ages, the under-15 and under-18 tournaments will be combined into one massive schoolboys league extravaganza at Dolphin Oval.

ASSRL Day One livestream: Underdog relishing Queensland test

Queensland broke a nine-year title drought in the under-18s division at the last ASSRL National Championships in 2019.
Queensland broke a nine-year title drought in the under-18s division at the last ASSRL National Championships in 2019.

The ASSRL has partnered with News Corp to live stream all 25 games of the championships on the recently launched grassroots sports streaming service, KommunityTV.

ASSRL chairman Anthony Lanskey said the lack of tournaments over the past two years had put a sizeable dent in the development of emerging athletes across the country.

“We are very excited for the return of the tournament,” Lanskey said. “It has been a real hole in the pathway over the past couple of years.

“We believe there is a range of talented players who missed out on the opportunity to be seen at that level.

“But the gap (in the program) has given us the opportunity to revisit how we run our champs. Previously we ran two separate 15s and 18s tournaments, but by bringing them together we have the showcase of schoolboys league in one place.

“We believe we have got an outstanding rugby league product that we would like to share with as many people as we can. Not everyone is able to get to the championships, but there will be a full week of 25 games including semis and finals that they can watch online with News Corp.”

KommunityTV’s live stream will include all matches across the tournament’s seven days, including the under-18s championship decider.

Queensland won the under-18 title for the first time in nine years in 2019, but it won’t just be about the eastern states.

The under-18 tournament will include the best players from across the Combined Affiliated States, which includes Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory.

WA, Northern Territory and Victoria will also have individual teams in the under-15 competition, where the Goannas – an all-indigenous side comprising players from all corners of the country - will feature.

News Sport Network managing director Michael Wilkins said the ASSRL Championships was a key building block in the establishment of KommunityTV as a leading brand in grassroots sports live streaming.

“The best young rugby league talents from every corner of the country will come together to battle against the best players in their position,” Wilkins said.

“The ASSRL championships have been a highlight on the annual rugby league calendar for 50 years, and it is a proud moment for KommunityTV to be able to broadcast the historic event.

“This partnership is the next evolution of our comprehensive grassroots rugby league coverage, which already includes the NSWRL junior representative season as well as the NRL Schoolboys Cup.”
