Another Peter Mulholland Cup match, another boilover.
With a rapidly growing reputation, the highly fancied Central Coast Sports College headed south to finish the pool stage with a perfect three from three record.
Their only problem, no one told the Ryde boys from Holy Cross College who blindsided them with a 34-16 hiding to keep alive their own hopes of a perfect run in the pool stages.
In a blistering start, Holy Cross jumped out of the gates and led 10-0 following tries to speedy backs Samuel Mardini and Jope Rauqe.
Despite the aid of a stiff breeze, Central Coast were unable to mount any scoreboard pressure, but the tide eventually began to change with the introduction of key bench forwards.
Badly needing a try before the break, the Central Coast boys peppered the line and eventually came up trumps when sup-sub Blessing Foini crashed over under the posts.
But it wasn’t enough, and with the change of ends Holy Cross put the match beyond doubt with an avalanche of tries to extend the margin to 28 points with 10 minutes to play.
Arguably the best on ground, Mardini started the charge with an electric effort. With no room to move, the Eels pathways winger left several defenders in his wake to post his second.
Centre Jarrod Kanaan weaved across for another before Rauqe - a Canterbury Harold Matts rep - powered over on the left side of the field.
Fullback Kayden Kanaan crossed for the sixth, before Central Coast fullback Isaac Fotu-Moala raced away to score the first of two late tries.
With the victory, Holy Cross will need to back it up if they are to top the group with a sizable win over Westfield Sports High in the final pool game on June 26.
For Central Coast, they can only watch on, and hope they have accumulated enough points to hold down the top spot before the finals.
PREVIEW
They are the giantkillers of the Peter Mulholland Cup, but don’t expect Central Coast Sports College to ease off in their final pool game with Holy Cross Ryde.
In just their second season of the competition, the new boys are two from two after announcing themselves with the scalp of reigning champions Westfields Sports High.
Packed with pathways talent amid a rapidly evolving rugby league program, coach Michael Sullivan senses a golden opportunity when Central Coast heads south on Wednesday.
And you can catch all the action from Holy Cross College LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 11am.

“Complacency is always a worry, but we’re trying not to let it creep in,” said Sullivan.
“The boys weren’t as upbeat following the win over Farrer. There’s big turning points in games and they turned the momentum on us and quickly added two tries, so we need to be better than that.”
Placed in a daunting pool, with a victory over unbeaten Holy Cross, the Coast boys could open a dream finals run.
“While it’s a difficult pool, we’ve flipped the draw with the win over Westfield and then Farrer,” Sullivan explained.
“Now it might work out well for us. If we beat Holy Cross we get two shots at it once we go through to the quarterfinals, and we get the home ground advantage.”
Led by Josiah Fesolai, the Sydney Roosters SG Ball rep tops a quality list that O’Sullivan says is far stronger than their debut campaign.
“Our depth is good, we’ve got a lot of Andrew Johns Cup and Harold Matthews reps and there’s always guys champing at the bit, meaning there are always five or six tough calls to make,” he said.
“We didn’t have that luxury last year and got found out. Over the last 12 months with the growth of the college, we’re now in a privileged position where the depth will remain strong for at least the next year or two.”
Playing alongside brothers Joshua and Caleb, it’s a depth inspirational skipper Fesolai knows better than most.
“The twins are exceptional, Josh is a winger and Caleb plays in the back-row,” said Sullivan.
“They are two years younger and still only 16. It’s a privilege to have three brothers in the same team.
“I think that bond helps, especially at a school level. They enjoy playing with each other and they keep each other accountable.”
