Replay: Hills SHS v Erindale College - Peter Mulholland Cup Round 2

It was always going to be one of the games of the 2024 Peter Mulholland Cup, and Erindale and Hills Sports didn’t disappoint when they went head to head at Ringrose Park.

A missed conversion from Hills after the final whistle was all that separated the two sides, with Erindale continuing their undefeated start with a 20-18 win.

Erindale coach Ashley Barnes said the super windy conditions at Wentworthville probably won his side the match.

“It was a really crazy sort of finish,” Barnes said.

“I was praying to all the gods again, but we were really lucky that it’s really poor kicking conditions today.”

Mistakes brought on most of the points in the first half, with a dropped ball at the kick off by Hills setting the scene for the next 30 minutes.

But it did take a little while for Erindale to open the scoring, with Brock Apolevski producing some fancy footwork and brute strength to blitz through the Hills’ line for a try.

Another dropped ball at the restart, this time from Erindale, practically gifted Hills the chance to level the scores as Cooper Rauhihi found space in the corner, but a missed conversion from Lincoln Fletcher still left them two points behind.

Yuri Hromow’s quick thinking delivered Erindale another try, catching Hills napping after a penalty restart to run straight through to the line.

Two unanswered tries from Fletcher and Mikey Nasser before the break gave Hills their first lead of the game, heading to the sheds up 14-12.

Barnes said despite trailing at the break, he was pretty happy with how his team performed.

“We were pretty good for most of that half,” Barnes said.

“It was just a small period just before halftime there.”

Erindale didn’t put themselves back in front until very late in the half with a brilliant try from Geordan Amaiu, while Mitchell Brophey added his own soon after for a seemingly unbeatable 20-14 lead with barely a minute left.

Hills, however, wouldn’t go down without a fight and managed to find a try mere seconds before the buzzer, leaving it all down to Fletcher to level the scores.

The difficult conditions meant the kick went wide and Erindale took the win 20-18.

PREVIEW

There’s no rest for Hills Sports after a disappointing start to their 2024 Peter Mulholland Cup campaign - and coach Scott Jones wouldn’t have it any other way.

Just seven days after their frustrating 26-12 loss to Hunter Sports High School, Hills are set to host ACT powerhouse Erindale College.

“Every game in this competition is going to be tough,” Jones said.

“But we need to get ourselves right at the end of the day.”

Catch the game LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on Wednesday from midday at Ring Rose Park, Wentworthville on KommunityTV as part of a massive four games of PMC action.

Erindale enjoyed a near perfect opening match, destroying Illawarra Sports High 64-6 in front of a home crowd.

Rising star Harry Hudson, in particular, tore Illawarra apart, scoring a hat-trick.

They have been perennial strong performers in recent years, having been beaten in the semifinals in 2022 and 2023 - and coach Ashley Barnes has them firing nice and early.

Jones is wary of the team from Canberra and knows his boys will have to play at their best, or a 0-2 record could well mean the end of their 2024 campaign.

“I haven’t looked at their tape yet, but I know they had a pretty easy win,” he said.

“All the schools involved in this competition are good teams and we’ve got to pay the due respect.”

Jones confirmed no major injuries came out of the loss to Hunter, other than bruised egos, and said the days leading up to their next game will show the team’s true resilience.

“They usually are a resilient team,” he said.

“We’ll have to see their response.

“We’ve got a really good bunch of leadership boys so they’ll take the lead from them and see how we go.”
