Live stream: Farrer MAHS entertain deposed Peter Mulholland Cup champions Westfields Sports High

NSW CHS half Jordan Hamlin heaped more pain on Westfields with a man of the match performance in Farrer’s impressive Peter Mulholland Cup win. Check out the REPLAY.

Replay: Farrer MAHS v Westfields SHS - Peter Mulholland Cup Round 3

Westfields Sports High’s winless premiership defence has come to an end with a 16-6 defeat on the road to Farrer MAHS.

With both sides’ quarterfinal ambitions blown away in the early rounds, Westfields headed to Tamworth eager to open their account in front of a vocal Farrer crowd.

But it was locals who exploded out the blocks as halfback Jordan Hamlin vindicated his selection for NSW CHS.

In the eighth minute, the No.7 sent winger Matt Beattie across untouched in the right corner, and they almost combined for another following a Hamlin grubber.

Cruelled by unforced errors, the visitors struggled to build any meaningful momentum and went to the break trailing 4-0.

Best served by five-eighth Jhevon Lele and fullback Chinedu Udeh, Westfields threatened at times in the opening half but they were matched by desperate Farrer scrambling defence.

Fullback Leif Dietrich saved the home side before halftime, pulling off several try-saving tackles.

Hamlin kept chipping away following the restart, toying with Westfields’ left edge defence with numerous dangerous raids.

But it was the young gun’s two attacking kicks midway through the half that secured the upset victory.

A booming 40-20 was closely followed by a towering torpedo bomb that would have made Canterbury’s Matt Burton blush.

With the ball allowed to bounce, Harrison Thrift cleaned up the dregs to make it 10-0.

Westfield immediately struck back and narrowed the margin to four points when Teancam Epati raced away to score under the posts.

But hopes of a Westfields comeback quickly unravelled with a knock-on from the kick off.

Then Dustin Wyrzykowski burrowed over to make it 14-6 with five to play, before man of the match Hamlin iced Farrer’s breakthrough victory with a penalty goal after the final siren.

PREVIEW

Less than 12 months after their big national success over Palm Beach Currumbin, Westfields Sports High won’t be featuring in this year’s Peter Mulholland Cup quarterfinals.

Their fate was sealed over four weeks ago when Holy Cross scored six tries in a 34-12 demolition. It followed a stunning opening round 36-6 defeat to Central Coast Sports.

Now they face an 800km round trip to Tamworth to wrap up their 2024 PMC obligations.

With three players in the NSW CHS squad that finished as runners up to NSW CIS at the recent ASSRL U18 Championships, they are obviously still a team capable of producing some quality moments.

Ryda Talagi, brother of Parramatta Eels sensation Blaize, impressed so much in Coffs Harbour that he was named in the Australian Schoolboys squad. He even earned this write-up after his performances during the week.

“The imposing Westfields Sports High School senior is the type of player you hope doesn’t return the ball from the back fence because if he does, your shoulders will be sore. The thunderous forward only turned 17 earlier this year and has the body made for the biggest stage, so watch this space.”

Farrer began their PMC campaign with an encouraging 28-12 defeat on their travels to western Sydney against Holy Cross. They were well in the contest until two late tries pushed the scoreline out.

They were then no match for Central Coast - conceding 50+ points and putting paid to any chance they had of advancing to the final eight.

But back home for the first time this season, in front of their passionate school support, and with the likes of NSW CHS representative Jordan Hamlin, Callum Cocking and Luke Jeffrey, they can be a dangerous opponent.
