It started with Cooper Dean-Potaka’s sharp footwork cutting through the Farrer MAHS defence, and it ended the exact same way as Central Coast Sports College proved they are no fluke.

Dean-Potaka, who scored a brilliant first half double including a try off the kick-off, stepped back off his lethal right foot through fatigued defenders in the final minute.

He accelerated through the half gap, and immediately found his outside men to send Joshua Fesolai streaming down the touchline to bring up the half-century for Central Coast Sports College.

It capped off a fantastic second-round performance for the Central Coast boys, running out 52-10 winners over Farrer MAHS, to extend their unbeaten start to the Peter Mulholland Cup.

Central Coast coach Paul Franze spoke about the belief his squad had in themselves and one another before the match, and it isn’t hard to see why they believe.

With stars of the future like Dean-Potaka out the back, the brilliant Lachlan Simpson pulling the strings from dummy-half and two-try gamebreaker Josiah Fesolai at lock forward – the Central Coast side has all the ingredients to make them a powerhouse of the Peter Mulholland Cup.

Simpson had his fingerprints all over the dominant win, with his run first mentality out of the ruck causing havoc for the Farrer MAHS defenders.

In the same style as Melbourne ace Harry Grant, Simpson used his footwork out of the ruck to drag in defenders before unleashing his big men into the gaps that opened up.

It was a move that directly set up two tries in the first half to hard-running forwards, but likely led to plenty more as the gaps opened up out wide late in the match when Farrer MAHS began counteracting the move.

Dean-Potaka continued his blazing form from the school’s season-opening win over Westfields Sports High, with his speed and footwork at the line causing plenty of problems for Farrer in the first half.

There were several bright spots for the visiting Farrer side, dominating the early stages of the second half with back-to-back tries thanks to the hard running of forwards Callum Cocking and Dustin Wyrzykowski.

But the fight back was short-lived as Simpson turned on the after-burners to wrestle back momentum for the Central Coast Sports College, running in five-straight tries in the final 20 minutes.

Belief.

It is the single word principle which has underpinned Central Coast Sports College’s fast start to the Peter Mulholland Cup.

It is also a big reason why it has been easy for coach Paul Franze to keep his squad grounded ahead of their second-round clash against Farrer MAHS.

The Peter Mulholland Cup clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and The Daily Telegraph website at 11.30am, Tuesday.

The Central Coast boys have every right to still be basking in the afterglow of their shock triumph over reigning national champions Westfields Sports High, and potentially lose sight of the upcoming challenge that Farrer MAHS poses.

The only thing is, the win didn’t come as much of a shock to them.

“It was not so much of a surprise for us, we know what we are capable of as a team,” Central Coast coach Paul Franze said.

“I think we have a good squad within the college, and these boys are at a point where a lot of them are playing representative footy and have that ability.

“We have a next man up mentality in our squad, it is about knowing your role and doing your job on the field. Then we have those players who can play that off the cuff style off the back of that hard work.

“There is a lot of excitement about what we are doing as a team, but we just need to stick to the principles and philosophies we took into that first game. Our principles are the things we stand for as a squad, there is one overarching one that we want to standby which is belief. Having belief in ourselves and in each other.”

Farrer MAHS will be looking to bounce back after a tough start to the Peter Mulholland Cup, going down 28-12 to Holy Cross College in the opening round.
