A homemade weights room, which spills out of their garage, and daily sessions pushing each other to the limit is merely scratching the surface of what makes the Blackburn-Kingi brothers so important to Endeavour Sports High.
The duo, who have been part of the school’s rugby league program for the past two years, since moving across the Tasman, have embedded themselves on a lethal right edge.
Older brother Dallas is a stocky, fast-moving finisher on the wing, while brother Hemi, still only in Year 11, has made a home in the back-row with his barnstorming carries putting the fear in opposition defences.
But size, power and speed are character traits that Endeavour coach David Howlett believes are merely secondary for these brothers.

“Those two boys have outstanding characters,” Howlett said.
“They have been real asset to the school, with how they carry themselves off the field and how they engage in our school community. They are excellent people and excellent students.”
It is a character trait the long-term schoolboys coach has seen cross over into their football.
While both brothers were put into the Sharks junior system last year, they struggled to get game time in the Harold Matthews Cup side.
That all changed this year, with both boys pulling on the black, white and blue, before making a strong start to their Peter Mulholland Cup campaign.
“With how hard they train and how hard they work, they have improved out of sight,” Howlett said.
“Hemi played in the Sharks Harold Matts side this season. He started in the squad but out of the side, then he finished as the starting prop in the preliminary final. He became a key part of that team.
“Dallas has followed a similar trajectory this year. He was part of the Matts program last year but he didn’t play a game. Still through his hard work he managed to make the SG Ball squad this year.
“That is their mentality, they work hard and get better.”
It’s no more obvious than when the brothers go head-to-head, which according to their coach happens most days.
Whether that is in their homemade gym or on a the training paddock in wrestling drills, where younger brother is more than happy to pick out older brother to rumble with.
“They have a gym set-up in their garage and are super competitive,” he said.
“They are both working out every day trying to outdo the other. They live and breathe weight training.
“One is outgoing, and the other is quiet, they’re into each other at training, they wrestle each other.
“They are the perfect brothers. They are at each other all the time, but you just know these two clearly care a lot about each other.”
