Replay: Patrician Brothers Fairfield v All Saints Maitland - Peter Mulholland Cup round 1

Patrician Brothers, Fairfield showed why they are one of the teams to beat this season after a an impressive 38-16 win over All Saints Maitland to open their Peter Mulholland Cup campaign on Wednesday.

All Saints led 16-12 at the break but Patties piled on five tries in a dominant second half to secure a blowout victory.

Jeziah Papa was the standout of the match, scoring a hat-trick, including two clutch tries in the second half.

Pats took the lead early, however the try from Mouhamad Ayache just minutes after the first whistle was quickly matched by All Saints’ Harry Dunn.

The first half went back and forth before two consecutive All Saints tries gave the Maitland side the four-point advantage at the break.

Pats Fairfield assistant coach Josh Morgan said the boys were making ‘stupid’ mistakes in the first half.

“We were way too loose around the ruck,” Morgan said.

“The boys definitely got a rev up at halftime.

“But the best thing about this group is that they react to what we’re saying, so once we get a response to that, they get the message.”

From there it was all Patties, who not only turned an attacking master class but looked solid defence when asked questions by their opponents.

Pats Fairfield now prepare to face rivals Patrician Brothers Blacktown next month and Morgan said they can’t afford to make the same mistakes.

“When you come up against Blacktown you really can’t make those mistakes,” Morgan said.

“They won’t let us get away with it, so we will be getting it out of the boys before then.”

“We’ve got some pretty strong players across positions that we probably haven’t in the past couple of years,” Plank said.

“So that’s brought a bit of energy into the squad.”

All Saints have a pretty solid line-up for the new season, featuring Knights’ Jersey Flegg players Cody Hopwood and Jack Hillier as captains.

Chase Butler is ‘a young half that’s really flashy, skilful and creative.’

Plank said there’s a few young players to keep an eye on this season.

“Chase Butler is one to sort of watch out for,” Plank said.

“He’s a young half that’s really flashy, skilful and creative.

“We’ve got Jack Thompson, who recently won the Harold Matts with the Warriors for the first time in their history.

“He’s a halfback and he’s come back from New Zealand obviously full of confidence. He’s going to steer us around.”

All Saints are looking to build on the success of last season where they made it all the way to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by eventual winners Westfields Sports High School.

They lost to Central Coast in their first game before rallying to hammer Hunter Sports and edge out Farrer MAHS in a final pool game thriller.

Cody Hopwood has taken on the co-captaincy role this year.

There’s no northern pool this year so, along with Pats Fairfield, All Saints will face Patrician Brothers, Blacktown and Matraville Sports High School, with the top two in their pool to progress to the quarterfinals.

It’s a tough draw but Plank says the team is ready to embrace it.

“We think it’s really exciting to play against some of these big schools like Fairfield and Blacktown,” Plank said.

“We got out of our group last year, so we’ve got that confidence for this year as well.”
