Victoria University has claimed a second straight Storm Cup win with a 38-16 victory over Mount Ridley placing them back in premiership contention.

The round 3 battle at Seabrook Reserve ended up a comfortable win for Vic Uni despite a strong first-half showing from Mount Ridley.

After a seesawing opening few minutes, it was Wivenshalom Tyrell-Tupuo that scored the first try of the game to give Victoria University the early lead.

But a response from Mount Ridley’s Chara Mataafa some six minutes later had scores once again all locked up at 4-4.

Some late first-half ascendancy returned the lead in Victoria University’s favour to 10-4 at halftime before that became too much for Mount Ridley to handle in the second-half.

Back-to-back tries from Lockyer-Azile Foliola and PJ Anitalea in the opening five minutes snuffed out any real chance Mount Ridley had to cause an upset, with the 2023 premiers eventually running away with the result.

PREVIEW

Victoria University Secondary College coach Tony Adams says his team is right where it needs to be as it aims for a second Storm Cup premiership in three years.

The 2023 winners will take on Mount Ridley on Tuesday as they look to record a second victory of the campaign.

The round three clash will be broadcast live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 2pm.

After losing to reigning premiers Hallam in the opening game Victoria University bounced back impressively with a 56-10 rout over Manor Lakes last week.

Adams said the side was building into the season nicely.

“A couple of boys were out early on, so that left us a little bit short against Hallam,” he revealed.

“We had our full compliment against Manor Lakes.

“Playing that game we did a lot of things right, especially the way we controlled the ball and our defence is getting better.

“We took a lot of confidence out of that game knowing that if we get things right we can compete.”

The focus for Adams and the team has been on cohesion as the new players work into the squad with those who have stayed from previous Storm Cup seasons.

“We’ve got some union boys, some league boys, so we just want to get on the same page,” Adams said.

“We want to build our season.

“You’ve got to play a couple of games together, build some cohesion, build some combinations and then hope the boys understand what the game model looks like and execute under pressure and a bit of fatigue.”

Adams said the forward pack will be where the team wins and loses and experienced players Elijah Po Ching and Anaias Jones-Teao had impressed.

Another player has also played well while also being successful in another sport.

Melbourne Rebels junior representative player Otto Wolfgramm has dominated in the first couple of matches for Victoria University.

“He’s adjusted really well,” Adams said.

“He doesn’t know a lot about rugby league but plays front row.

“He’s likely to be in the Rebels squad (this year).”

Adams said the focus against Mount Ridley was to win and secure either second or third to avoid Hallam in the semi-finals.

“We feel as though if we go out there and play our game and do the little things well we’ll compete well (against Mount Ridley),” he said.

“We want to get a result, we want to be second or third as Hallam has practically wrapped up first already.

“You want to avoid playing them in the semi’s if you can.

The other round three contest was due to see top-placed Hallam face bottom-placed Manor Lakes, however the latter has forfeited the match.
