Ipswich SHS celebrate their Langer Trophy grand final success

Can Ipswich conquer the country once again?

It is the burning question ahead of a blockbuster NRL Schoolboys Cup season, which starts in Queensland on Tuesday, May 30 and will be streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV in 2023.

KommunityTV has cemented itself as the home of the schoolboys rugby league after signing a landmark two-year deal with the NRL to showcase the brightest teenage talents until the end of 2024.

Only eight months after the electric Gabriel Satrick led Ipswich State High to national glory over Patrician Brothers Fairfield, the defending Langer Trophy champions will be back on deck to reclaim their title.

And that’s not all.

KommunityTV has also secured all the Year 10 games as well - that means more Walters Cup, Dolphins Challenge and Cowboys Challenge games.

The Langer Trophy will feature Sunshine Coast juggernaut Caloundra State High for the second straight season.

Caloundra, which joined forces with Melbourne Storm’s pathways program in 2022, qualified for the Langer Trophy alongside Redcliffe High School in a lead-in tournament last month.

Storm pathways manager Tim Glasby said the club was excited to see its juniors given an opportunity against the Sunshine State’sbest schools in Palm Beach Currumbin and Keebra Park.

“We’re really proud of our partnership with Caloundra State High School and it is very pleasing to see the steps forward theirrugby league program has taken over the last couple of years,” Glasby said.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity for players who are part of our pathway to get exposure to top-tier schoolboy rugby league.”

Regional Queensland competitions Aaron Payne Cup (North) and Dolphins Cup (Central) will kick off on the same day.

As part of our exclusive coverage, KommunityTV will live stream every match from the open and Year 10 divisions this season including the regional finals, Phil Hall Cup final and National Schoolboys Cup final at Allianz Stadium in September.

The NRL Schoolboys Cup competition has included an illustrious roll call of players who have gone on to successful careers in the NRL, including the Broncos’ Payne Haas (Keebra Park) and two-time premiership winner Nathan Cleary (St Dominic’s College).

Several recent graduates have also reached some of the game’s highest heights including Queensland Origin duo Jeremiah Nanai (Kirwan High, 2020) and Tom Dearden (Palm Beach Currumbin, 2018).

“As a lot of these kids have links with junior pathways and NRL clubs, it’s fantastic that they are so supportive of school competition” Dallas said.

The Cup also heavily endorses education as a priority, with students only allowed to compete if they maintain 90 per cent attendance, and are enrolled to finish year 12.

“The focus of this competition is promoting education and positive behaviours in young students, As opposed to just highlighting their rugby league talent” Dallas said

All of the action will be available to watch LIVE with KommunityTV from May 30.
