NSW CIS 22 bt NSW CHS 20 (U18)

Jesse McLean announced himself as a star of the future by scoring a hat-trick to help NSW CIS beat NSW CHS in an Under 18s All Schools thriller.

A Penrith product who is contracted to the Panthers, McLean beat two defenders late in the match to score the try that got CIS home 22-20.

The winger had already blitzed his way to the line twice in the first half before CHS mounted a comeback.

In a blockbuster battle between two of the competition heavyweights, the independents drew first blood when Siteni Taukamo showed why he is considered an NRL fullback in the making.

Contracted to the Sharks and set to go full-time, the Newington College student showed a blistering turn of pace to get on the outside of the CHS defence and set up Jesse McLean for the first of his three.

CHS hit back midway through the half when Junior Paulo look-a-like Sam Tuivaiti crashed over from close range.

But it was CIS who went to the sheds leading 14-6 after McLean went over to bag a first half double.

Western Australia 26 d Victoria 18 (U15)

Western Australia have outlasted a brave Victorian outfit to grab an eight-point win in the final match of the day.

In a tightly contested match between the two emerging states, WA came home strong to beat Victoria.

First Nations Goannas Invitational 40 bt Northern Territory 10 (U15)

There was plenty of ball movement and free wheeling attack as the First Nations Goannas Invitational blazed to a victory over the Northern Territory.

Featuring players from Murgon SHS to Tagai State College on Thursday Island, St Gregory’s College Campbelltown to Condobolin SHS, the Goannas gelled to lead 26-4 at halftime before claiming the clash 40-10.

The Northern Territory scored first with a left side raid that finished with centre Brian Ross plunging over.

But the Goannas hit back, with quick play-the-balls providing front foot ball for forwards Jared Charlie, Ezekiel Ivey and long striding Braith Sloane to score.

NT also scored the last try, a wonderful, long distance effort finished by Harry Heath (MacKillop Catholic College, Johnston).

Riley Cooper was named NT player of the match while for the Goannas, edge back rower Ivey claimed his team’s best award.

NSW CCC 74 bt CAS 0

A star-studded NSW CCC team proved too strong for CAS as the All Schools Championship continued in Redcliffe with the Catholic Colleges putting on a rugby league clinic.

In the first under 18s instalment of the day, and a curtain raiser to the blockbuster NSW CIS v CHS clash, the CAS team, which is comprised of players from emerging states, had no answers for a NSW side that was packed with NRL-contracted talent.

Led by rising Panther’s fullback Liam Ison, NSW CCC ran in 42 points in the first half alone to prove themselves as contenders for the schoolboy crown.

NSW CCC continued the assault in the second half and posted 74 points in a one way match.

Ison was a constant threat in the middle.

Combining with star edge players Ethan Roberts and Thomas Fletcher, Ison both set up tries and scored them himself.

U15 - NSW Combined Independent Schools 22 drew with Qld White 22

NSW Combined Independent Schools’ Onitoni Large produced a five-star performance while Queensland five-eight Ellyjah Birve displayed nerves of steel as NSW CIS and Queensland White played out a thriller.

Queensland came back from the dead to score two tries in the last three minutes, with Te Iri Rudolph-Mokaraka (TSS) reaching out to cross seconds from the end.

That left Caloundra SHS’s Birve to kick the conversion midway between the sideline and posts, and it never looked like missing.

Large and his brother Ashton, the official NSW man of the match, were elite in producing several clutch plays to crack open a tight clash.

No.6 Onitoni had a hand three tries, then broke the game open with a long striding, gliding performance to score.

Queensland White, with No.13 Zac Bateman the glue of the side, were close, very close to winning, recovering from deficits of 10-0 and then 22-10 to push hard for victory.

There were plenty of thrills and spills, including when NSW Combined Independent Schools winger Reilly Caswell ran 70m to score 12 minutes from fulltime.

With his legs working like pistons, Caswell roared down field to score under the posts.

It was an entertaining affair, with Queensland (White) nearly scoring twice before NSW Combined Independent Schools bounced back with successive tries to lead 10-0.

Then Queensland halfback Dallas Ingram out flanked the defence to score, and with Birve’s wideout conversion, it was 10-6 at the break.

Queensland then struck first blood in the second half to make it 10-all, with Luke Jones (PBC SHS) finishing a succession of battering ram efforts to squeeze over in the corner.

Earlier, Bowen’s Eneliko Savelio drew the battle lines with a bruising early hit that shook the ground, but there was no defending NSW left centre Heamasi Makasini moments later when he blasted through to create a try for his winger Caswell.

The NSW Combined Independent Schools had early opened the scoring when fullback Callum Grantham found a narrow channel to the line after a clever inside ball.

This after Queensland had started the better, with a right side run from Canterbury-signed edge Daquan Talaepa shredding the first line of defence, and then a cross field kick creating a chance which was denied due to an off-side chase.

Queensland then had another half chance when centre Jake Carsburg went close, but Combined Independent Schools winger Brooklyn Heath tackled him short.

PREVIEW: Baby Blues on parade

A battle of the baby blues will headline a mouth-watering weekend of action at the All Schools Championships as two powerhouse NSW teams set to go head-to-head on Sunday.

In a match that will feature a long list of NRL-contracted stars that includes Raiders-bound fullback Chevy Stewart and Dolphins recruit Isaiya Katoa, the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) team will take on NSW counterparts, the Combined Independent School (CIS), on the second day of the schoolboy’s championship.

DAY ONE: Queensland starts with a bang

Chevy Stewart is going to be an important player on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the clash that will also feature Sharks top 30-bound fullback Siteni Taukamo and future Rooster Blake Steep, NSW CHS coach Steve Holz declared his NSW’s rivals as favourites.

“There are some very strong sides who will be competing,” Holz said.

“The CIS side look particularly strong. I’d say they are probably the favourites. A lot of those boys played in the Under 15s carnival in 2019.

“Those boys are back now as 18 year olds and they know what to expect. It is going to be a new experience for a lot of our boys.”

But Holz, who teaches at Strathfield South High School, might be being modest given his side is brimming with talent that includes full-time Rabbitohs winger Tyrone Munro and Dolphins target Harrison Hassett.

“We have only had a couple of sessions to prepare so it has been just about getting them familiar with each other,” Holz said.
