He has been the firecracker off the bench who has been a key part of Patrician Brothers College’s unbeaten start to the Peter Mulholland Cup.
But there are a lot more strings to the bulldozing bow of Charlie Xuereb.
The middle forward will again prove crucial as the reigning champions aim to sweep Pool A in a cracking showdown against All Saints College, Maitland on Tuesday.
The game will decide who finishes atop the pool with both schools already guaranteed of their spots in the Peter Mulholland Cup finals.
Such is the size and power of the Patties forward pack, led by Wests Tigers recruit Christian Tapau-Moors and Panthers young gun Steven Whalan, the bottom-age Xuereb hasn’t been able to crack a starting jersey.
But it hasn’t dented the impact he has had on the competition this season.
Xuereb was one of Patrician Brothers’ best in their opening round win over Matraville and backed it up against Holy Cross, helping set up the match-sealing try for Cameron Bamblett.
They are performances that come as little surprise to coach Noah Meares, who said the Panthers’ Harold Matts forward rivals some of the school’s top alumni.
“It is good to see him being as dominant as he was,” Meares said.
“I don’t think I have seen a kid as hardworking as him when it comes to preparation and training. He does all of those little extras.
“He is right up there among the best workers I have coached and might even one up Jacob Halangahu.
“He has a big future ahead of him.”
The Patrician Brothers forward pack will be one of their key strengths against an All Saints side which is full of belief in 2025.
The Maitland boys have not missed a step over the opening two rounds and are averaging 40 points per game.
Talented halves duo Chase Butler and Cody Field have the raw talent to beat any opposition, while their outside men have shown an ability to finish from anywhere.
If there was a team that wouldn’t show fear against the highly-fancied Patrician Brothers, this All Saints side is it.
“We know what they are like but we see it as a challenge,” All Saints coach Elliott Plank said.
“We played them last year and got beaten pretty comfortably, but that was a young side we had then. A lot of that team are now in Year 11 and have built confidence from those opportunities.
“We are a confident side, we have played really well this season. We know there are parts of our game we need to fix, especially against a side like Patrician Brothers, but we are just excited to challenge ourselves and prove we belong with the big schools.”
