Westfields Sports High will hold two records coming into Friday’s Schoolgirls Cup semi final against Bass High.
They enter the knockout stage as the only team to go undefeated through the group stage, winning both of their games and securing the points in a round three forfeit.
On the flip side, while the other three teams remaining in the competition played last week, come Friday it will have been 50 days since they’ve taken the field.
The semi-final clash between Westfields and Bass High will be exclusively live streamed for free on Friday.
“We would’ve liked to have played the game against Matraville,” head of Sport Troy Weeden said.
“Our last game we played was seven weeks ago. That can be tough on a side in a competition where you don’t get as much continuity (as a club-based league). Bass got that tough hitout against Hills last week.
“You can do as much opposed work as you can. We had the mid-term break and girls going off to play in the nationals. So this week’s training will be very important.”
While they enter the contest against a red-hot Bass High relatively cold, there’s been enough promising signs throughout the pool stage to suggest they can book a spot in the grand final.
They’ve averaged over 40 points per game in their two wins, while conceding just 16 in total, with Weeden buoyed with how they’ve been able to use the ball.
“I look at what they’ve done with the ball and they’ve been pretty clinical. They haven’t been sheltered and haven’t been afraid to use the ball,” he said.
“When we’ve made errors, we’ve been able to defend them. That’s the mark of a good side.
“We can push a pass here and there. They back their skill to know they can back their defence to defend it. It’s a rare talent to be able to do that.”
With wet conditions expected for Newcastle, middle forwards like Meekah Viiga, Layla Tima and dummy-half Dawn Tui will all play a crucial role when the going gets tough.
“A lot will rest on our middles. Bass are reliant on what they do in the middle of the field, so we’ll be looking to hold tight through that first 10-15 minutes,” he said.
“We have some outside backs who have a lot of speed, so our middles will need to lay the platform (to use that pace out wide).
“Possession will be very important.”
