They might be undermanned going into a clash with a club embedded in the FNQRL top three, but according to the Gladiators there are no excuses this weekend.
The Mareeba side will look to players outside its regular first grade squad as the side grapples with an injury crisis ahead of its Round 14 showdown against Southern Suburbs.
The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and the Cairns Post on Sunday as the match of the round.
The Gladiators’ outside back stocks have been decimated by injury across the past month, with their commander-in-chief Trent Barnard looking to the club’s under-19s and reserves squads to fill the gaps.
Still, with their spine and forward pack mostly intact, Barnard said there’s zero excuses going into the clash with the high-flying Cockatoos.
“Whether we’re at full strength or not, we can still turn up with the right attitude,” he said.
“There’s a few decisions to be made about who we call up and who plays where, but I’m confident whoever we bring in will do the job.”
With his side teetering on the edge of finals contention with four rounds left to play, Barnard said he wants to see his players “get in the grind” against their high-calibre rivals.
“Be willing to grind it out and don’t give them any easy ball. When we get our chances, take them,” he said.
With the ladder as tight as it is, Barnard said he’s focusing on the individual games rather than getting them to look ahead too far.
“This is a team that’s on the up after some challenging years, but with that comes less experience in how to win high-pressure games,” he said.
“We’ve had some close losses on our home deck that we’d like to have back, but that’s all part of the learning curve.”
Southern Suburbs snapped a two-game losing streak last weekend with a crushing 50-14 win over Innisfail at Alley Park.
Northern Pride-contracted flyer Ricco Falaniko scored a hat trick in the win, and will continue to be a top target for the Cockatoos halves.
The Gladiators’ A-grade clash with Suburbs kicks off at 3pm and will be preceded by the under-19s at noon and reserves at 1.30pm.
