Two of the FNQ Rugby League’s title contenders are gearing up for a showdown with huge finals implications, and the action will all be streamed live right here on KommunityTV.
Second-placed Atherton Roosters and third-placed Southern Suburbs will face off on Saturday with a top two finish and a first week bye for finals on the line.
It will be part of a Super Saturday of action which also features the FNQRL Women’s preliminary final between Atherton and Kangaroos.
Atherton coach Joel Riethmuller he was expecting there to be “a bit of feeling” between two sides with premiership aspirations.
“The chance to finish top two is a pretty big carrot,” Riethmuller said.
“The last time we played against Suburbs, it was a fiery game and there was a bit of feeling in it.
“They’re playing good footy at the moment. I’ve watched a fair bit of them and they’ve looked really strong.”
The Roosters have enjoyed a couple of weeks on the sidelines, with a scheduled bye on the weekend preceded by Edmonton’s forfeit the weekend before.
Riethmuller said the break had given some of his players a chance to recuperate and repair with many carrying injuries.
“I think it’s also built some cohesion because it’s rare throughout the season that you have your entire A-grade side fit and healthy but that’s exactly what we’ve got.
As for the sighting of Cowboys premiership winner and 200-game NRL veteran Jake Granville on their team list for the forfeited Storm clash, Riethmuller said he was a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ option.
“If our entire team is fit then it’s unlikely he’ll play, but for that Edmonton game we had five or six players unavailable and so we had planned for him to come off the bench,” he said.
“It was for if we got a bit busted up and had a few guys missing. We may see him down in Tully for round 18.”
The A-grade clash between the Roosters and Cockatoos is set for 6pm.
Prior to the A-grade clash it will be Atherton’s women’s side who host Kangaroos in FNQRL Women’s preliminary final.
Reigning premiers, the Roosters pulled out the get out of jail free card last week, scoring a try in the final minute to force the game into extra time before barging their way over and onward in the finals series.
The Roosters will be determined to bounce back from their 22-10 major semi-final loss to Yarrabah ahead of what is a rematch of last year’s grand final.
Yarrabah will await the winner in next week’s grand final.
The day’s action kicks off from 3pm.
