If Ignatius Park can topple their southern rivals, the Townsville juggernaut will set up a final round local derby against Kirwan with the minor premiership on the line.
Ignatius Park coach Will Jack said he was expecting a physical grind despite both sides running up huge scores in recent weeks.
“I’d say it’ll be a pretty defensive-minded game. They’ve put a few points on in recent weeks but I think it’ll be a pretty defensive sort of game played through the middle,” Jack said.
“We had a few boys away for the Queensland champs for touch, but they’ve arrived back (this week). So we’ll rip into training and get back around the group.”
Iggy Park will take a full-strength team into the clash, with a main focus on cleaning up errors that plagued the school’s last outing – a 62-0 demolition of Holy Spirit in Round 2.
“A lot of boys in the squad have had a chance to throw their hands up now. We sort of played a few of the other boys who missed out on Round 1 against Holy Spirit. Most of them have done really well,” Jack said.
“The second half was good once they got the errors out of the game. We definitely can’t afford to have that many errors this week. It’s an area we need to improve on.
“It’s just concentration and attention to detail sort of stuff, it’s nothing we can’t fix.”
The Payne Cup clash will feature some of the more exciting talent emerging from North Queensland including St Patrick’s star halves Adam McSherry and Joshua Toby and Ignatius Park big men Sitiveni Afu and Ryan Fletcher.
St Patrick’s College enters the Schoolgirl Cup clash coming off a hard-fought 4-0 triumph over Trinity Bay SHS last week. They take on a fresh St Margaret Mary’s outfit which had the bye in round 3.
