Some of Australia’s best young male footballers will have the chance to show off their skills on the national stage next week at the National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour.
More than 600 boys will take to the field for their state in the tournament, held at the Coffs International Stadium from September 26-30.
The main two fields championships will be exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV as part of a partnership that has included the girls’ tournament this week.
And just as the tournament laid the platform for the careers of Socceroos legends like Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka, some future national team stars could well be taking the field in Coffs Harbour next week.
In fact, some of the players have already attracted the attention of national selectors, with Queensland’s Rylan Brownlie, Victoria’s Michael Ghossaini and Northern NSW’s Alex Nunes all recently selected in the shadow squad for Australia’s Under-16 Joeys squad which took part in the AFF Youth Championship in Indonesia last month.
Brownlie, a forward who plays for the Brisbane Roar’s youth academy, is the son of former professional striker Royce Brownlie, who enjoyed a decorated professional career that saw him play for the likes of Marconi Stallions and Brisbane Strikers in the NSL, Queensland Roar and Wellington Phoenix in the A-League, and Swindon Town in England’s League Two.
The younger Brownlie also captained his school, Kelvin Grove State College, in last year’s Bill Turner Cup.
Northern NSW’s Alex Nunes was also recognised with a spot in the Joeys’ shadow squad.
An attacking midfielder who plays for the Newcastle Jets’ academy, Nunes recently starred for his school team, Hunter Sports High, in the Bill Turner Cup, picking up the player of the tournament award as his team made the semi-finals.
Earlier this year Nunes also spent two weeks with the youth academy of Portuguese football giants Benfica, where he was given a taste of the life of a professional footballer.
“It was so good. It was so much different to here. The facilities were amazing,” he said.
“It’s really opened my mind up to the different opportunities for the future. I’d love to be able to play professionally.”
Elsewhere, Victoria’s Michael Ghossaini is another one expected to make waves at the tournament.
Another forward who can play as either a lone striker or as part of a top two, Ghossaini is a goal scoring machine, banging in 33 goals in 22 NPL games last year and 37 in 24 games this season for his club side Glen Eira FC.
