U16 SEMIFINAL REPORTS

Louis Jones is the hero of NSW after a spectacular save in a tense penalty shoot-out put NSW Metro Sky through to the U16 NYC grand final.

Victoria Blue gave away the lead in the shoot-out by missing two in a row, with Jordan Graoroski securing the final goal and a spot in the decider.

“It feels electric,” Jones said.

“When I saved that pen and when I saw the last pen go in, it’s just all smiles.

“I just couldn’t be happier to be honest.”

Jones said he had ‘full confidence’ in his penalty-taking teammates.

“We missed one, but that was OK, we picked our heads up,” he said.

“Then they missed the pen, I saved the other one and we got the win.”

Metro Sky go on to face Queensland White in the decider and Jones said he has no doubts his team can get the job done.

‘We have the grit.’

It was a simple mindset that produced an extraordinary result as Queensland White upset Northern NSW 3-2 to progress to the U16 NYC grand final.

Coming from 2-0 down just after the start of the second half to level it 2-2 with only minutes to spare, Isaac Cookson capitalised on some scrappy forward play to find the back of the net and secure the shocking victory.

U15 SEMIFINAL REPORTS

South Australia have booked their spot in the U15 NYC grand final following a dominant 3-0 win over NSW Metro Navy.

Chris Irakoze added another to his now 10+ tournament goal tally while keeper Sajjad Husseini kept another clean sheet.

“I’m so buzzed about the win,” Husseini said after the match.

“It’s the first time SA are in the final and the boys and everyone are just really happy.

“We’ve really prepared for this, all of the preparation since November last year and we’ve really put on a show for everyone.”

Their opponents, Victoria White, put up a good fight, with a second half goal from Orlando Chrysis putting the team back in the game before Blue quickly quashed any hope.

PREVIEW

‘There are no friends in football.’

That was especially true when NSW Metro Sky faced off with fellow statesmen Metro Navy in the NYC quarter finals on Friday.

Both teams were stacked with A-League Academy talent, with 10 players from across both teams coming from Western Sydney Wanderers Academy, including Akol Akon.

Akon scored his third goal of the campaign for Metro Sky in their 3-1 win over Metro Navy, and he said it’s always nervy playing against teammates.

“It’s easier to get angry at (players) you already know,” Akon said.

“Because they just want to get in your head more.

“But we all know football, we know there are no friends in football, but straight after the game we’re all mates again.”

NSW Sky had an ordinary start to their U16 campaign, losing their first match against Queensland Silver 2-0.

“I think the first game was more just nerves,” Akon said.

“It was our first time playing together, but now it feels more like a family.”

The team are now set to face Victoria Blue in the semi finals and Akol said he believed the team has developed enough to go all the way.

“I have confidence in the boys,” he said.

“We will be alright as long as we play together and play better than we did today, honestly.

“If we play like we did (against Victoria White), then we’ll smoke them at least 3-0.”
