WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED …

ONE FOR THE TRUE BELIEVERS

It was a victory for the true believers after Western Australia caused a stunning boilover to reach the Emerging Socceroos Championships under-16 final.

With a fairytale ending a real possibility after seeing off Victoria Blue 1-nil in their semi-final, WA now plays NSW Sky in the decider.

Incredibly, WA only made it through to the knockout phase by squeezing out of their group with one win and a draw.

They then beat South Australia in another major upset in the quarter-finals.

But against heavyweight Victoria Blue, nobody really gave them a chance.

The winning goal was deserving of a place in the grand final after Achnaff Sayon, blinded by heavy rain, headed home magnificently.

The remarkable goal coming at the end of a devastating counter-attack and equally superb cross to find him alone outside the six-yard box.

In fitting scenes, the whole team and bench ran to Sayon to celebrate the goal in what would be the decisive moment.

HANDBRAKE MUST BE APPLIED

With two braces already this tournament, silencing Victoria Blue striker Thomas Nasso could be the difference between winning and losing the under-15 final.

Nasso now has five goals heading into the decider and is hitting form at the right time with three from his past two matches.

The tall striker extended Victoria Blue’s semi-final lead to 2-0 against Western Australia right on halftime after firing past goalkeeper Aaron Black from the penalty spot.

There was more pain for Black minutes after the break when he misread a corner pass and the ball fell to the feet of the dangerous Nasso on the far post to tap in.

While Victoria Blue has ample firepower with Mikey Cohen, Jack McEwan, Kai Satilmis all multiple scorers, keeping Nasso off the scoresheet will go a long way to deciding the final.

Victoria Blue will take on Queensland Maroon after they saw off NSW Sky 2-0, both goals coming in the second half.

Savva Lucas found the back of the net in the 35th minute and Zachary Harrison in the 47th, with Harrison’s latest effort taking him six goals as the tournament’s leading scorer.

THUNDERBOLT GOES UNREWARDED

A powerful strike by substitute Max Nicholls deserved better after NSW Navy succumbed to NSW Sky in a thrilling under-16 semi-final penalty shootout.

Trailing one-nil in the second half, Nicholls took possession of the ball deep in his half before running almost the length of the pitch to unleash a long-range strike.

Sky goalkeeper Lachlan Allen climbed at full stretch to his right but the ball eluded him to thunder into the net and draw NSW Navy level.

It was a spectacular moment in a clash eventually decided from the penalty spot where Sky progressed to the final courtesy of a 1(5)-1(4) result.

Sky had entered the second half with a one-nil lead thanks to Aston Reid, who earlier cut back on to his left at full pace inside the penalty area to hammer home a superb goal.

The Sky striker is making a habit of that, having scored in similar fashion in their 3-1 quarter-final victory.

NSW Sky will play underdogs Western Australia in the grand final.

PREVIEW

The semi-final stage has been set with NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia all set to feature in the Emerging Socceroos Championships final four stage on Thursday.

Every match of the tournament will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV, with the Under-15 and Under-16 semi-finals set to take over Field 1.

The remaining four fields will play host to a number of placing playoff matches.

Two NSW state mates will headline the semi-final action as they go head-to-head for a spot in the Under-16s decider.

While plenty at Football NSW will be happy in the knowledge that no matter what the sky blue will fly proudly in the grand final, it won’t stop the young guns of NSW navy and NSW Sky from laying it all on the line on Thursday.

Both sides are coming off strong wins in the quarter-finals and know how to find the back of the net.

In the other Under-16s semi-final Victoria Blue will go head-to-head with a Western Australia side which has flown well and truly under the radar in Melbourne.

Victoria Blue and Western Australia will also clash in the Under-15s semi-finals with the two sides coming off thrilling penalty shootout wins in the quarter-finals.

In the other Under-15 semi-final showdown Queensland Maroon will aim to maintain its impressive record over its NSW rivals, when the boys clash with NSW Sky.

NSW Sky shocked the tournament on Wednesday when they put four goals past the previously impenetrable South Australia in a quarter-final boilover.

Every match of the Emerging Socceroos Championships will be broadcast live and exclusive from July 6-11.

For the second straight year KommunityTV and News Corp Australia have partnered with Football Australia to bring the nation’s flagship underage national championships to life on the small screen.
