Reid, currently an assistant at Sydney FC, was overjoyed with the way young Aston attacks the game.
“My wife and I speak about it quite a bit. When we see him play, we look at it in a way where he’s very creative and makes things happen,” he said.
“He’s a totally different player to what I was. I get excited to watch him. He wants to take on players, try and set up his teammates, and score goals.
“He plays in one of those positions where he has no fear of trying things. That’s what really excites me.”
Aston’s best position is at central attacking midfielder, allowing the Sutherland and Sydney FC prospect the freedom to do his things and try to spark whatever team he features in.
Paul’s abilities in football saw him link with Bradford City and Brighton and Hove Albion in the UK, with A-League stints for Sydney FC, Adelaide United and Melbourne Heart, something that Aston is looking to follow.
“He’s always loved playing football. Some people think that parents push their kids, but it definitely wasn’t like that,” Paul said.
“He developed a love and passion, as did my daughter. He’s pushing himself to get to this level, and while he knows there’s plenty of work to do, he’s coming on nicely.
“It’s his ultimate dream (to play soccer professionally) and we’re certainly not going to stand in his way.”
The six-day tournament features elite level talent, with Reid labelling it a great opportunity for young players to not only test themselves against the best, but make a good impression in front of watching eyes.
“It’s one of those opportunities to put yourself up against the best players,” he said.
“I look back and think these are some of the most rewarding times. To get together and try to win a tournament for your state.
“Every player is in that position to put their best foot forward.”
