A stellar captain’s knock from Mac Wright has led the Southern Storm to a two-wicket win over City Cyclones in their T20 Strike League opener.
The match was held just hours after the Northern Territory’s snap 72-hour lockdown ended, allowing the tournament to resume after it was postponed earlier this week following just one game.

Opening the batting for the Storm, Wright anchored the innings, making 63 off 45 balls before falling to the spin of Dylan Hunter and a diving outfield catch from Campbell Kellaway.
The Hobart Hurricanes batsman has been in outstanding form in the northern winter, topping the averages in the Strike League one-day competition and dominating bowlers and he continued in the same vein on Thursday night.
Wright and Josh Kann started at a gallop chasing the target of 132 and while Kann fell for 19 (14) attempting to push the pace when Hunter’s spin was introduced to the attack, the Storm looked set to cruise to a win when 2-80 at the halfway point.

But Wright’s dismissal in the 16th over triggered a collapse and the match went down to the wire, with Blade Baxter hitting the winning runs with just four balls remaining to give his side a two-wicket victory.
Hunter was outstanding for the Cyclones, taking 3-19 from his four overs, including the key wickets of Wright and Kann, as well as slowing the run-rate significantly.

Earlier, the Cyclones set a target of 132 following a knock of 44 (34 balls) from opener Jack Edwards and a 64-run second-wicket partnership with Nick Larkin (29 off 26).
The opening stages set Cyclones up for a big total but the Storm bowlers applied the screws to leave their side with a manageable target.

Fellow opener Keegan Oates was out for a duck in the opening over against the Cyclones after attempting to drive Beau Webster uppishly into the wind.
But his dismissal did little to put the breaks on Edwards, who looked in magnificent form until he was dismissed in the first ball of Blade Baxter’s spell.
Larkin followed soon after, bowled by Reiley Mark, with the Cyclones’ run rate slowing markedly after the pair’s dismissal.
A quickfire 25 off 27 balls from Dylan Hunter and 11 (7) from Yash Pednekar, including the only six of the innings, made the target respectable.
Interstate tug of war emerges over all-rounder
Emerging all-rounder Josh Kann could be the centre of a tug of war between Queensland and Tasmania for his services after signing a Big Bash contract with the Hurricanes.
Kann will feature for the Southern Storm in the T20 Strike League on Thursday night after the Northern Territory’s three-day lockdown was lifted at noon and competition was given the green light to resume.

The final piece of the top end’s Cricket 365 program, the T20 Strike League kicked off on Sunday night with the Desert Blaze beating City Cyclones by seven wickets in the opening clash, a match streamed live on News Corp websites.
All-rounder Kann is keen to show off the skills that have earnt him a Big Bash contract and attention from two states.
A Gold Coast product, Kann has been part of Queensland Cricket’s programs but has so far missed out on making his first class debut.
Kann will return to Queensland following the Strike League and his Darwin club commitments with Tracy Village to have a final shot at a Bulls contract.
But the Hurricanes offer has ignited interest from Tasmania and the Tigers program as well and he would consider a permanent shift south if it was the best option for his cricket future.

“I’ve been working pretty hard for it for the past few years so it’s good to get that little achievement and hopefully I can take it further,” Kann said of his signing with the Hurricanes.
“I’ve been in the second XI squad (for Queensland) for the past few years and then I’ve got the attention from Tasmania that’s hit over the past month or so, so it’s been a pretty tough (decision) but I think I’m going to come home and trying to play for Queensland and then head to Tasmania just before the Big Bash.
“I’m going to give it one last shot (in Queensland) and if they give me an opportunity, I’ll take it but if not, I’ll be off to Tassie.”
Kann’s performances in the Queensland Premier Cricket competition attracted the interest of the Hurricanes but he has continued his excellence in the top end and will be a key player for the Storm if their clash with the Cyclones goes ahead if lockdown is lifted as scheduled at noon on Thursday.
“Hopefully we can get through that comp but it’s just good having all those big players up here and it’s like a mini Big Bash playing against all those top guys,” he said.
“(The Cyclones) have a lot of potential, they have a lot of good players in their team and I think it’s going to be a pretty good game.”
The Storm lost former Sydney Thunder spinner Arjun Nair when the lockdown was called, while Hugo Burdon (Blaze), Corey Hunter and Noah McFadyen (Tide), also left the Territory before Greater Darwin and Katherine were locked down on Monday, the majority of them Queenslanders who would not face lockdown conditions in their own states on arrival back home.
But Kann does not believe it will affect the Strike League.
“It might be a good thing to the comp to give some people that have not played many games through the tournament a go,” he said.
