The New South Wales Kookaburras ended a good day for its state teams, beating New Zealand 71-37 in under-16 girls at the Country Cup.

The team led from start to finish and could have won by more after leading by 30 points at half time.

But a New Zealand fightback in the second half saw the Kookaburra lose the third quarter before extending the margin to 34 at the final whistle.

New South Wales player Kira Juffermans scored 19 points for the winning team.

The South Australian Sharks have shown why they are one of the teams to look out for this week in the Country Cup making light work of New Zealand Kea in their opening match in under-18 boys.

The Sharks won 86-36 after taking control of the contest during the second half.

Early on, Kea were competitive, keeping the Sharks to just 15 points in the first quarter and keeping the margin to just 13 at half time.

The Sharks flexed their muscles in the second half, scoring 54 points and keeping the New Zealand team to just 17 in the half in reply.

The Victoria Goldminers have made the ideal start to their title defence in under-16 girls in the Country Cup, beating the New South Wales Waratahs in their opening game.

The team led from start to finish to win 48-38 but the margin could have been bigger.

The Goldminers at one stage had a 15 point lead but the Waratahs were able to come back late to reduce the margin.

Both teams are in action tomorrow against Tasmanian Tigers and NZ Kea respectively.

The Devils have made their mark early on the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup.

The Tasmanian Devils have survived a late charge against the South Australian Magpies to secure a first up win 42-39 in the under-18 girls at the Country Cup in Albury.

In a close game between two quality teams, the Devils led throughout, as the Magpies tried to come back multiple times to no avail.

Late in the fourth quarter, with a minute remaining, the Magpies got the margin to one but Tasmania were able to score a late basket to seal victory.

The Magpies were left to rue at least four free throw misses in the last three minutes of the contest.

PREVIEW - Southern raiders shot at fast start in the Cup

South Australia’s rising country stars have an opportunity to kick off the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in style as they dominate our opening day coverage.

KommunityTV will stream every game of the five day tournament from both Court 2 and Court 8, starting with a thrilling afternoon of action on Tuesday.

South Australia’s best regional talents will be on full display on day one of the tournament including playing in three back-to-back games on Court 2.

But it is their highly anticipated clash against a spirited Tasmania Devils in the Under-18 girls, which will kick off the Court 8 coverage at 11.30am, that shapes up as the match of the day.

Tasmania, who took out the under-14s girls the last time the Country Cup was held four years ago, has made it clear they are aiming at another golden run in 2023.

While the South Australian squads have quietly gone about their business in the lead up to the tournament, there is no questioning the success of the Country Basketball programs in Central Australia.

KommunityTV subscribers will also get their first look at the teams who have travelled across the ditch for the tournament with NZ Kea taking on the SA Sharks in the Under-18 Boys to kick off the action on Court 2 while NZ Weka’s Under-16 girls side will close out the afternoon against NSW Kookaburras on Court 8.
