Lake Ginninderra v The Southport School (Men’s Champ Gold)
MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL PLAY-OFF
The Southport School was crowned national champions on Friday as it put on a show in its hometown to claim a blowout win over back-to-back champions Lake Ginninderra.
After a week of nail-biting finishes, it all caught up with the Lakers in the gold medal game as the Gold Coast side was a cut above from the opening tip-off.
Ben Tweedy and human-highlight-reel Jaylen Pitman piled on the misery for Lake Ginninderra with several astonishing buckets.
James O’Donnell was the best for the Lakers as he scored 23 points, while Tweedy led the way for The Southport School with a monster 42-point, 10-assist and 14-rebound triple-double.
After an incredible opening three quarters, TSS held a remarkable 44-point lead at the final break before running home to win by 61 points.
With their starters off the court, and their back-up players getting time on the court in the final minutes, the points continued to flow as The Southport School finished 127-66 winners.
Westfields Sports v Rowville (Women’s Champ Gold)
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL PLAYOFF
Rowville capped off a stunning tournament with a victory in the gold medal game against Westfields.
After making it through the pool and knockout stages undefeated, Rowville made it a perfect six wins from six when they downed Westfields by 17 points.
However, it was not all smooth sailing, as the Victorian side suffered a major scare midway through the contest.
After storming out to a 13-0 lead to begin the game, it looked like Rowville’s dominance was going to continue, but Westfields fought back to make it a one-possession game.
But when the pressure was at its highest, the diamonds from Rowville formed as Bonnie Deas and Manuela Puoch guided their side home with 26 and 21 points respectively.
Rowville v Newington College (Men’s Champ Bronze)
MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP BRONZE MEDAL PLAYOFF
A Joel Foxwell masterclass has led Rowville to victory against Newington in the men’s bronze medal clash.
The Victorian superstar had been in scintillating form this week and he continued in the same vein on Friday against the NSW independent school.
With 31 points, there was little Newington could do to stop Foxwell from going to work.
The second quarter proved to be the difference in the contest as Rowville began the period trailing by seven points, but lifted to another level to take an 11-point lead at the main break.
Newington showed some fight late in the game but it was not enough as Rowville claimed a 95-87 win.
Marsden v John Paul College (Women’s Champ Bronze)
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP BRONZE MEDAL PLAYOFF
Marsden State High bounced back in style from their heartbreaking semifinal defeat on Thursday with a comprehensive performance to claim victory in the women’s bronze medal game.
After a tight early contest, Marsden went on a 14-0 run into halftime, which was where the game was sealed.
Marsden fought through fatigue to further extend its lead in the second half, cruising to a comfortable 31-point win.
The bronze medal contest also gave the extended bench players an increase in minutes and the depth of talent at Marsden was clear to see with 11 players spending 10 minutes or more on the court.
Sienna Bourke and Sinai Foai were the standouts off the bench with 10 and 13 points respectively.
