It was billed as a can’t miss match and SA Metro and Queensland North delivered in every facet at the Basketball Australia Under-18 and Junior Wheelchair National Championships on Monday.
The clash needed overtime to decide a winner, and it was SA who walked out winners on the back of 45 points from Annaliese Elliott and Keira Gardiner.
Gardiner was particularly impressive, with 22 points and 17 rebounds, as SA Metro hung on for victory.
Despite trailing by 11 at halftime, Queensland surged back into the contest on the back of lead scorer Taryn Bond, who put up a game-high 24 points.
But after North turned a 12-point deficit with 5mins 40sec on the clock into overtime, they copped a massive knock when Bond was fouled out early in the extra period.
The win kept SA Metro’s hot start to the tournament intact, who, alongside Victoria Metro, WA Metro, Victoria Country and NSW Metro remain unbeaten after the first two days of competition in Moreton Bay.
Vic Country also needed overtime to get past Queensland South, winning 68-63 in a hard-fought affair.
In the men’s draw, SA Metro was brought back to earth with a tough 84-78 loss to Victoria Country.
SA piled on the points through Koby Moir (20 points, eight rebounds) and Isaac Riddle (25 points), though Vic Country’s offense, led by Lucas Byrne’s 30-point, 10-rebound double-double, proved too much to overcome.
NSW Metro now remains the only unbeaten team in Pool B with SA Metro pressuring the new group leaders.
There were also two big blowouts with WA Metro thrashing Tasmania 105-55 and Queensland North cruising past the Northern Territory 122-48.s
In Pool A, WA Metro and Victoria Metro are unbeaten after the first two days.
