Having only two changes to the side that finished fourth in 2022 adds to the confidence levels as well - with coach Anthony Petrie insisting ‘we’re going there to win it.’

“I think we’ve got a pretty solid roster, it’s hard to single out just one player,” said Petrie, whose NBL playing career covered 11 seasons and six teams.

“We’ve got a few state players in Ben Tweedy, Jaylen Pitman, Jackson McCabe, Ashley McGrath and Jack Foley, and they’re always solid on the court.

“Then we’ve got young Indy Cotton, who is in the junior Australian team, so I think it’s a really solid, deep squad that works really well together.”

Pitman was one of the stars of last year’s tournament, scoring 153 points, including a 35-point haul against Lake Ginninderra. Tweedy contributed 105 points and McCabe 53.

Cotton, a 16-year-old guard who was one of the top performers at this year’s U16 Asian Cup in Qatar, showed his potential on the schools national stage in 2022 with a 22-point haul against Brisbane State and another 21 points against Newington College.

He is sure to play a pivotal part in a much bigger role this year.

The Southport School will also benefit from hometown advantage, with the tournament being held just minutes away from campus.

“It’s fantastic to be able to play at home, it’s such a great venue,” Petrie said.

“It’s really nice, I think more so for our school community because they really care about the boys.

“To have it right here on our doorstep, literally 10-15 minutes from the school, so they can all come and support means a lot to us.”

The Southport School will open their tournament against Rowville Secondary College on November 17, with all the action from the championship division to be streamed LIVE on KommunityTV.
