What they lack in experience on the big stage, NSW Metro girls more than make up with a ‘natural style of play that really compliments each other’.

That’s the opinion of coach Danielle D’Morias who has a squad full of fresh talent at her disposal for the Basketball Australia U16 Championships in Bendigo, which starts on Saturday, July 6.

NSW Metro finished fourth in 2023 but all the team either graduated to the U18 ranks or moved interstate, so D’Morias had to start from scratch.

What she has ended up with is a squad full of up-and-coming players which, she believes, can push for the national title.

“Individually, the girls have a lot of natural talent,” D’Morias said.

“And their natural style of play really compliments each other in their teammates.”

“I’m excited to see what they all can do because this is their first time on the stage.”

All the action from the U16 national championships will be available to stream LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from July 6.

Although the girls haven’t played together as a team before, D’Morias said they have plenty of experience with each other.

“This group of girls have spent quite a lot of time together through the SPP program, and through (Southern Cross Challenge), tournaments and stuff like that,” D’Morias said.

“So they’re quite familiar with each other in their playing patterns, which has made it easier considering they are a new group.

“They all seem to get along really well and that was probably not really something that we had to focus on too much.

“They seem to have gelled quite instantly, which was good.”

The team features a trio from Norths Bears in Sasha Clague, Sienna Fishpool and Izabella Mansory, NBL1 East star Mikayla Minshall’s younger sister, Mia, from Sydney Comets, Marley Sialeipata as well as Caitlyn Grima and Peyton Skinner from Hills Hornets.

D’Morias said there’s plenty of depth in the squad and if they can pull it all together, the team will be tough to beat.

“We definitely got some great guards that are quick and some wings that have got some pace,” she said.

“And then we’ve got some big bookends on the end as well some bigs there, some six footers.

“So hopefully, you’re putting all those pieces together, we’ve made the perfect storm.”
