The new year has just begun, but teenager Isla Juffermans finds herself busier than ever.
In the midst of her first season in the WNBL with the Sydney Flames, the 18-year-old is preparing for her final basketball nationals, and for a big move to the US to play college basketball with the University of Louisville.
“I haven’t had time for anything other than basketball,” Juffermans said.
“Holidays aren’t a thing for me anymore, I’ve just been in Sydney training all summer.”
U20 NATIONALS HUB: How to watch, schedules, key info
Juffermans will be a key component for NSW as they look to go back-to-back at the Basketball Australia U20s national championships in Ballarat from January 30.
Catch every moment of the six-day tournament LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV. That’s 88 games, including all Ivor Burge contests and U20 medal playoffs.
Despite having such a packed schedule, Juffermans said she’s got her eye on claiming another nationals gold after being one of the star performers at the 2023 event in Geelong.
The Coffs Harbour product averaged 15.14 points per game, 10.43 rebounds and took home MVP honours.
“Winning it last year was really special,” Juffermans said.
“It’s not often you win a gold medal at nationals, especially if you’re NSW, normally it’s a team like Victoria.
“I’m not nervous about it, we just need to keep our heads straight, not get above ourselves and do what we need to do.”
Juffermans is the only country girl named on the NSW squad, which includes Flames teammate Caitlyn Martin and Opal Bird from the Centre of Excellence.
“It’s a bit bittersweet being the only country girl,” Juffermans admitted.
“It would have been nice to have a couple of my old teammates there with me for my final competition, but I do love playing with the Metro girls and I think we have a really good chance.”
With so much coming up, Juffermans said she’s excited to just take it all in and learn as much as she can.
“I’ve been learning so much with the Flames, Cayla (George) has been like a big sister to me and I’ve just been soaking it all in,” she said.
“I think college basketball is going to be a big learning curve, but I’m so excited to see where it takes me.”
