NSW rode to the 2021 women’s U20 Australian Basketball title on the back of an MVP performance from 17-year-old Novocastrian Chyra Evans and a quality supporting class.

If the Blues are to repeat the feat two years on then they will likely need another MVP-calibre performance from a 17-year-old.

Isla Juffermans, from Coffs Harbour, is currently completing year 12 and training at the Centre of Excellence in Canberra. She is also our number one ranked women’s player for the tournament.

And you can watch Juffermans and her teammates LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from Tuesday, with all 86 games from the tournament to be streamed across the three courts from Geelong Arena.

The NSW side of 2021 (there were two NSW teams that year with the other one finishing fourth) ended a decade-long dominance from Victoria, whose star-studded team featuring future Australian age representatives Jade Melbourne, Gemma Potter and Charlise Dunn had to settle for silver.

It also broke a 20-year title drought.

Evans, who is now attending college in the US, had a standout tournament, averaging 18.8 points per game and 7.8 rebounds.

Juffermans, who at 193cm is 5cm taller than Evans, averaged 19.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game in last year’s U16 Asian Championships in Jordan, where she was both tournament-leading scorer with 118, and highest rebounder with 73.

She has represented NSW Country in every age group and played for Australia in the U16, U17 and U18 teams across four tournaments last year, earning her the 2022 NSW Junior Female Athlete of the Year.

The NSW team is made up from a majority of first-time players in the U20s, with only Emily Foy (Newcastle Falcons), Felicity Henderson (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles), Alexandra Kayrouz (Sydney Comets) and Carla Pitman (Hornsby Ku Ring Gai Spiders) returning for a second tournament.

And Juffermans can’t wait for the tournament to start.

“Sometimes it gets a bit boring here when we’re not playing as much,: she admitted.

“Games are just exciting, big adrenaline rush.”

The upcoming tournament will be Juffermans’ first time representing NSW as a whole, which she admitted feels different.

“Previously in U16s and U18s it was just (NSW) Country, but now we’re combined with metro so it’s predominantly metro as well, Sydney teams. So there’s seven metro girls and three country girls, including me.”

Although everyone on the team has competed in a state team before, Juffermans said it’s been challenging getting to grips with the new dynamic.

“I’ve played with a lot of them before, so it’s good to be back playing with them,” she said.

“It’s just kind of getting to know each other and knowing how each other plays.”

NSW’s campaign tips off on Tuesday with a double-header, first against the ACT (10:30am AEDT) and then against South Australia Blue (6pm AEDT).
