Live stream: Basketball Australia U20s and Ivor Burge National Championships (U20's & Ivor Burge National Championships)

Lucas and Mackenzie Morgan have brought an interesting dynamic to the NSW team - one coach Brook Pearce hopes can take them a long way in the tournament. Catch them LIVE on Tuesday.

A young Canberran named Patty Mills may have been the star of the tournament, but the 2007 U20 Australian Basketball men’s title belonged to NSW.

It was a golden period for the Blues. Twelve months earlier they were also crowned the nation’s best in yet another tournament where future Boomers legend Mills was the standout

But there’s been nothing since as Victoria (11 titles), South Australia (one) and, more recently, Queensland (three) have dominated.

Now, 16 years later, they head to Geelong determined to consign the worrisome drought to history.

The championships will be LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV, with all 86 games across three courts to be featured exclusively over six days from Tuesday, February 14.

Not only has the title eluded the state since those heady days, but there is a distinct lack of a medal-winning pedigree in the team.

But head coach Brook Pearce said that and the lack of success in previous years has only enhanced the players’ hunger.

“I don’t think any of them have actually won a medal. Some have been in a medal game but lost the bronze, so just that desire to do something they haven’t done, or NSW hasn’t done for a while,” he said.

The team is made up of representative players from across NSW, including from Byron Bay, the Hunter, Illawarra and Sydney, and getting the team together to prepare for competitions such as this can be a challenge.

Josh Dent and James O’Donnell are not even in Australia, as they are both participating in a tournament in America.

However, Pearce said working around these limitations is more common as the players get older and more experienced.

“It’s part and parcel, as they get older and they get better, they get to go and do those really cool opportunities, which takes away our ability as a state to get in some extra prep.”

The team also features twins Lucas and Mackenzie Morgan from Norths Bears, which has brought in an interesting dynamic.

“Style of play they’re both very similar, which helps me out as a coach because when you put one in for the other, you kind of don’t lose anything to the team.” Pearce explained.

“Personality-wise off the court, they’re both very funny, well-spoken young men. On the court, they’re less outgoing and friendly, they play really tough.”

Only Mackenzie was chosen for the team last year, and is one of just two returning players alongside Byron’s Harley Kent, though Lucas was named on the reserves.

Although nationals will be the first time the players will compete together as a team, Pearce is confident they’ll be able to step up.

“They’ve all been to a national championship before, they all know what it’s supposed to look like and they know what it takes,” he said.

Despite having limited training time, the team has so far looked promising.

“I think it’s a solid group of young men, we’ve not got egos, they all get around each other.

They’ve done a really good job of helping each other out if there’s any gaps in understanding or learning, they’re all there for each other,” he said.

The team will start their campaign on Tuesday on court 3 at 8.30am against Tasmania. They back up at 4.30pm on the same court to play South Australia Blue.
