Barker College will be contesting the women’s championship division at the Basketball Australia Schools Championships for the first time next week.

But rather than be daunted by the prospect of facing the best in the country, the Sydney independent school is embracing the challenge ahead.

“I don’t think they’re nervous,” said assistant coach Jared Scoines.

Barker, who were runners up in the U17 Girls Division One tournament last year, haven’t just set themselves up to perform well in this competition, they have a platform to succeed for years to come.

And that includes having the two youngest players in the Championship division this year - and by quite some distance as well.

Sasha Clague and Emma Lukell, who both played in the recent U14 Club Nationals at Casey in Victoria for Hornsby Spiders, are both only 13. Lukell doesn’t turn 14 until July next year.

There is plenty of experience and quality in the line-up, headlined by Lucy Mead, Maya Wilks and Keira Hudson.

Wilks and Hudson were two of the stars of the show in 2022.

Wilks scored 55 points, including 16 in the two-point loss to Rowville Secondary College in the gold medal match. Hudson contributed 97 points over the week.

Scoines says Barker’s tournament expectation is ‘to compete and be successful in every game.’

“One of the unique things about this team is that everyone is eligible to play again next year, we don’t have any year 12 students,” he said.

“We have a girl in year seven, one in year eight and then a couple in year 10 and year 11, so we’re really excited with the upcoming group at Barker.

“We’re not going in there saying ‘we think we can win it all’, but I think throughout the rounds, we want to be successful and put ourselves in the best position for quarterfinals.”

The Barker girls open their campaign against West Australian school Willetton Sports High School at 4pm on Monday, November 27, with all their matches available to watch LIVE on KommunityTV.
