There were plenty of standout performers from this week’s junior basketball spectacular in Sydney, but these guys were extra special. Here’s our starting five plus bench players.

Replay: Basketball Australia Under-14 Club Championships - Rockhampton v Nunawading (Boys Champ, gold medal)

The U14 Australian Boys Club Basketball Championships have been run and won.

Nunawading finished its dominant campaign with the gold medal on Friday with Rockhampton earning the silver medal. Kilsyth took home the bronze.

Throughout the week, there were plenty of standout individual and team performances.

Here are the 10 players we’ve picked in our team of the tournament.

CHECK OUT THE TOP GIRLS PLAYERS OF THE TOURNAMENT

Starting five

Andrew Watene, Rockhampton

What a player this young man is. With length and athleticism, he terrorised opposition defenders all tournament long. Was able to score at will in the mould of a point-forward. Able to get to the paint and score at the ring, but his jump shot was equally as nice. Far from a selfish player either as he continued to bring teammates into the game.

Charlie Wilson, Nunawading

Absolutely immense all week long. Used his size to score at will, mostly inside the paint, after averaging 19.47 points per game as the Spectres ran away with the national championship. Also had a strong defensive presence on the inside. The future is bright for him. Had a tournament high of 27 points against Woodville.

Michael Andrew, Southern Districts

His team might have ended the week without a medal but they wouldn’t have been in a position to contend without Andrew. On the floor, the young star was a huge presence at both ends. Able to shoot well from mid-range and get to work inside he has a bright future ahead of him. His speed in transition with the ball was one of the great sights of the week.

Tom Dammers, Nunawading

Another standout player for the Spectres all week long. You could easily speak about his offensive presence, but his ability to interrupt opposition on offence was a pleasure to watch. An athletic player who has a significant future ahead of him.

Lucas Li, Woodville

Enjoyed a brilliant tournament for the South Australian outfit. The guard was able to step up when his team needed him most in a variety of ways. Whether it was dropping a big three or a pretty assist to an open teammate as the Warriors broke in transition.

The bench

Lucas Byrne, Ballarat

One of the leading scorers across all six days of the competition. Byrne was comfortably the Miners biggest scoring threat across the weekend’s action.

Cassius Wall, East Perth

While he had an impact on the offensive end, it was on defence where Wall had the biggest impact. At the tournament’s end, he was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament – an award introduced by tournament sponsor Foot Locker.

Liam Keogh, Kilsyth

Keogh has a fantastic understanding of his game. He knows when to go big – highlighted by performances of over 30 points – and when to bring others into the contest.

Nicholas Nicolazzo, Whittlesea

A huge presence in the paint for the Pacers who thrived throughout the weekend. Scored when opportunities allowed and also made a number of big rebounds.

Ethan Custodio, Hills

The young guard is a star in the making. Controls the tempo of the game but knows when to impose his presence with a strong run of points.
