While some may go onto bigger and better things in the years to come, every boy across the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Victorian Rebels sides’ will long remember their 2025 round 6 Coates Talent League clash.
In what is sure to be considered one of the games of the season, it was the Swans who pulled off the greatest of final quarter comebacks to edge ahead of the Rebels 5.13 (43) to 5.12 (42) come the final siren.
CATCH THE BOYS REPLAY ABOVE AND THE GIRLS BELOW
Despite the horror inaccuracy from both sides throughout, Saturday’s clash was a terrific showcase of the some of the best young talent the feeder system has to offer.
It took the Rebels only 30 seconds to open their account with a centre clearance from ruck man Flynn Penry resulting in a contested mark and goal from Floyd Burmeister.
And while the only other goal of the opening term came from Nicholas Andreacchio at the six-minute mark, the game still had plenty of highlights to come.
The inaccuracy continued in the second-term – 0.4 to 1.2 – with the Rebels goal giving them a three-point lead at the long-break.
Talented tall Fraser Molan then extended that lead to nine points with an early goal in the third term and after Swans forward Tom Ryan missed late into time-on, it seemed Sydney’s ability to kick straight inside 50 may become their downfall.
But despite trailing by nine points at the final break, the Swans fought back to kick 3.1 to 1.3 in the final term and walk away memorable victors.
In the girls clash, the Sydney Swans Academy girls sunk the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in a supreme Coates Talent League display.
An early arm wrestle turned into an attacking masterclass from the Swans as they won 11.5 (71) to 4.5 (29) at Highgate Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
The two sides could barely be split in a 1.0 to 1.3 opening term, but the dour beginning was not a sign of what was to come.
And it was a brilliant rove and snap from forward Cassidy McArthur five minutes into the term which sparked the Swans into action.
Lila Micheletti, Taylor Smith and Alex Neyland then slotted a major each, while at the other end wastefulness for the Rebels combined with some desperate Sydney defence saw the visitors jump out to a 21-point halftime lead.
Forward half pressure secured a goal line major for Sarah Burton quickly after the main break to give GWV some hope of a fight back, but it was short-lived.
A swift response was followed up by a second goal from Smith, another from skipper Kiera Yerbury and from there the Swans could not be caught as they secured a seven-goal triumph to take back home north of the border.
It was Sydney’s second win of the season while the Rebels have now suffered back-to-back losses to fall to 2-3.

PREVIEW
A free-scoring Greater Western Victorian Rebels side is confident its new-found attacking flair can cause a surprise or two to a team it has never faced before.
The Rebels will take on the Sydney Swans girls academy for the first time in the club’s history on Saturday, looking for their third win of the Coates Talent League season.
Watch the two teams take on each other from Highgate Recreation Reserve live and exclusive on Kommunity TV from 11am, following by the boys clash at 1.10pm.
One of the surprise packets this season, the Rebels have started the season 2-2, mainly through their attacking flair, which has caused trouble to opponents.
Recently, for the first time in history, the GWV scored more than 100 points in a game, registering 101 in a 90-point win over the Bendigo Pioneers.
The renewed attacking threat has thrilled Rebels coach Sally Riley.
“This time last year we’d only kick 17 goals playing similar sides,” Riley said.
“This year we’ve kicked 30 in four rounds.
“I’d like to look at that kind of growth rather than wins and losses.”
Despite a pre-season interrupted with injuries, which did not allow the team to train fully together at times, Riley said the Rebels had exceeded expectations.
“This group has really jelled together, better than we thought,” she said.
“To start the season 2-2 we’re extremely happy.”
The success has been led by experienced players Elsie Conroy and captain Maggie Johnstone who have been among the best in all four games.
Milly Shortal, in her first year, has also impressed.
“She’s very new to the system,” Riley said of Shortal.
“She’s an absolute competitor in terms of her ability to win the ball. She might be leading the clearances.
“Maggie as a leader, she’s really stepping up.
“Even in the tight games she’s been able to perform and she’s enjoying her footy.
“Elsie is taking intercept marks and our defence has let less goals in this year and it’s down to her.”
Riley is wary of a Swans outfit which has a couple of potential AFLW draftees later this year.
One of them, Madeleine Quinn was best on ground as the Swans started their Coates Talent League season with an impressive 41-point win over Tasmania.
She was joined by Grace Parsons who kicked five goals.
Swans academy coach Tanya Hetherington said both have been impressive this season.
“Maddy, she’s a 186cm ruck who plays like an inside midfielder,” she said.
“She’s probably our cleanest ground level player, which says a lot about her, she’s a competitor and there’s a lot of upside about her.
“Parsons has a massive upside in her when she continues to get stronger and stronger.”
Hetherington added a couple of others to keep an eye on.
“Kiera Yerbury, she’s a 174cm midfielder, who has exceptional endurance, covers the ground well and makes good decisions,” she said.
“She is one to watch.
“Alex Neyland is a very exciting talent, she’s come back from an ACL.
“She missed a good 18 months but you wouldn’t know it, she’s an absolute freak the way she attacks the ball.”
The contest on Saturday begins a four-week stretch for the Swans, with three games during that time to end their season in the Coates Talent League.
Hetherington said the girls embraced the challenge of facing interstate opposition.
“I expect a good hitout,” she said.
“The Coates games are the game we build towards.
“We respect the teams and what they bring.
“Everyone is really looking forward to it.”
Hetherington said she would have a full squad to choose from for the clash.
