Live: Roger Federer v Novak Djokovic, US Open 2015, men’s final
NOVAK Djokovic has won his 10th career Grand Slam singles title with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Roger Federer at the US Open.
WITH a hostile New York crowd against him, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic cemented his dominance of an era, dramatically ending Roger Federer’s 28-set winning streak.
The Serb clinched his third Grand Slam of the season at Flushing Meadows, beating world No. 2 Federer in four sets — just as he did at Wimbledon only months ago.
The champion revealed he’d been inspired by the blockbuster war film 300, which he watched the night before Sunday’s final.
When the on court victory came, Djokovic embraced the film’s star Gerard Butler who was sitting in his player’s box and yelled in his face: “This is Sparta!”
Djokovic had to block out a roaring New York crowd that worshipped 17-time slam winner and perennial favourite Federer.
POLL: can dominant Djokovic catch Federer?
“Was it louder than ever? Maybe. It was unreal,” Federer said after the match.
It was the sixth time Djokovic had played a US Open final — and the second time he’d won it.
The 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory made 2015 the second year in his career that Djokovic has sealed three of season’s four grand slams, last time being 2011.
“It’s been an incredible season,” Djokovic said.
“Next to 2011, probably the best season of my life. But I’m enjoying it this year more … because I’m a husband and I’m a father and it makes it even more sweeter.
Djokovic said he’d been able to mostly block out the hostility of the huge crowd.
“Every Grand Slam has something unique about it. New York is about the night session,” he said.
“You know what is waiting for you. And plus, if you’re playing Roger who is a crowd favourite anywhere he goes — especially here — it’s a reality you have to face.”
Federer, who entered the final on the back of a 28-set streak which began in Cincinnati, seemed to find his momentum in the second set, but he was unable to sustain the on court dominance.
His wife Mirka sat in his box, and inched towards the edge of her seat in the fourth set when he seemed ready to climb back.
But it wasn’t to be.
The match had been delayed three hours due to the rain, which Djokovic said was difficult.
“It was a three-hour wait, first of all, rain delay, warming up, cooling down, eating, not eating, you know, figuring out what’s going on, will we get on the court at all tonight or not?” he said.
When they finally did, he slipped in the first set. He said there had still been moisture in the court and he needed two or three games to regroup after it.
Djokovic was humble in his victory, refuting the suggestion he was dominating his peers after dropping just one Grand Slam this year.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m dominating, but I definitely am very proud of all of the achievements,” he said.
He’s now played Federer 42 times, with them each winning 21 matches.
“To win against one of the biggest rivals — an all-time Grand Slam champion, somebody that always keeps on fighting till the last point, keeps making you play an extra shot, yeah, all these things now are very special to me,” Djokovic said.
Federer said he made too many mistakes.
“I know why I lost the match very clearly the moment I sat down at 5-2 down in the fourth or after the match was over … because of the mistakes I made,” Federer said.
“I have to get better at that.”
Federer said he was disappointed but it was a consolation that he’d been on a great stretch.
“It was a tough night, but still, I don’t know — thrilling at the same time.”
He said his great rival was having an “unbelievable career”.
