It’s time to make a stand for the Cairns Taipans

Cairns Post NBL columnist Cameron Tragardh believes it is time for the Cairns Taipans to make a stand on their home floor against the Perth Wildcats on Saturday night.

WE live in a world where we’re constantly told to be humble.

But for this Cairns Taipans team and especially for tonight’s game with ladder leaders Perth Wildcats, I’d like the Snakes to do the opposite.

I wanna see some passion.

I wanna see some fire.

I wanna feel some ego!

The message must be that “this stops here” and this is our house.

In life and sports we are told that growth only occurs outside our comfort zone.

I am forever grateful that former Cairns Taipans coach Aaron Fearne insisted that I became a better defender.

Even though that “wasn’t who I was” typically on a basketball court, I had to change for the team.

I see similarities in the lovely demeanour of coach Mike Kelly.

Every inch of his being is a kind, gentle, fun-loving guy, who everyone likes.

The only problem is that his team has taken those characteristics during their battle to defend home court.

We need to see that fire, and it’s up to Mike Kelly to light it for his playing group.

Their opposition tonight also mimic their coach.

But Trevor Gleeson’s approach more resembles the kid from school who was rough around the edges, and who you don’t mess with.

And his team plays with an attitude of “if you try to come into our garage and steal our bike we’re gonna punch you in the face”.

This has been evident in their last two wins, which have come with three starters out.

I think the leadership of former Perth Wildcat forward Lucas Walker can show the way with energy and emotion, and hopefully some more friends in Orange can join the party this evening.
