Trainers Lucy Yeomans and Lloyd Kennewell chasing city success with important stable filly Single ‘N’ Ready

Trainers Lucy Yeoman and Lloyd Kennewell are happy to leave Single ‘N’ Ready’s stakes aspirations in the hands of top jockey Blake Shinn at Caulfield on Saturday.

Booking a champion jockey usually means fewer instructions are required.

Cranbourne trainers Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans will take that approach with Single ‘N’ Ready in Saturday’s Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield.

A small field of seven three-year-old fillies will tackle the $150,000 contest with only four points separating the highest and lowest rated runners.

Tactics will be everything in such an evenly-matched field so the camp will let Blake Shinn decide the strategy on the $8 chance.

“We wouldn’t try and lead with her, I wouldn’t think, because she doesn’t have the early speed, but we’ll just leave it up to Blake and let the race unfold,” Yeomans said.

“He’ll figure it out.

“Those small fields can often be quite messy so the less instructions we give, the better.”

Kennewell and Yeomans have done their part, preparing the More Than Ready to finish in the placings at all four starts to date, but the three-year-old will always have a special place in the stable.

Single ‘N’ Ready was the first winner of Kennewell and Yeomans’ partnership when she saluted at Swan Hill last August.

The filly has performed well in city races at both summer runs, including a solid third to the smart Donegal in a race at Sandown on January 24.

Yeomans said Single ‘N’ Ready made have been a little reluctant to improve between horses, which made barrier one a slight concern at Caulfield.

“She got held up but was also possibly a little bit timid among the other horses at Sandown so that’s why we weren’t thrilled to get barrier one,” Yeomans said.

“I’d say he (Shinn) would be trying to pop off the fence and give her a bit of room.”

Yeomans said a Caulfield win would lead the stable to look for a stakes race for Single ‘N’ Ready during the hectic autumn period.

However, she said the promising sprinter could further mature in her four-year-old season.

“She’s quite a well bred filly so it’s great to get black type for their (pedigree) pages,” Yeomans said.

“She’s still furnishing and we think she’s a different horse from this prep to last prep.

“If she can improve like that again, she’ll be a bit of a beast next time around.”
