Trainer Pat Carey has his sights on a third-straight success with Who Dares before his attention turns to the Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final at Flemington on July 6.

Who Dares is aiming for a hat-trick in the 2024 Country Achiever Shane Fliedner Quality (1100m) on Saturday after consecutive wins at Caulfield and Flemington.

“He’s come up fantastic this prep, he’s won his two and we’re targeting the Santa Ana Lane Series with him and just spaced his runs a little bit this time,” Carey said.

“He had two sort of hard runs in a row and we spaced him (a month between runs) … he’s in good order, freshened up nicely.”

Who Dares defeated Nicolini Vito in the Listed Straight Six at Flemington last month.

Nicolini Vito has since strengthened the form with a win and narrow second.

“Form is strong and his own personal form is strong,” Carey, who trains in partnership with Harris Walker, said.

“He’s in touch with the rest of the field weight-wise, 58.5kg is still 4.5kg over the minimum, and he’s performed well at stakes level – in the Chester Manifold he ran second.”

He returned a fortnight later to run sixth, again at 1100m, behind Cause For Concern, beaten two lengths.

The four-year-old has been a model of consistency, with four wins and nine places in 21 starts.

“If you look back 12 months ago he was highly competitive in a strong three-year-old year in these kinds of races,” Carey said.

“He ran quite a few seconds, but they were good well performed horses who had good credibility, even stakes’ class horses, so he was running well just not winning.

“At the moment he remains off-season, we’ll just keep punching away and be guided by how he keeps handling the rise in class.”
