Trainer David Brideoake mindful of weight swing against unbeaten colt Interest Point at Sandown

Trainer David Brideoake says his Blue Point colt has progressed nicely since a Caulfield victory but is mindful of a 2.5kg weight disadvantage when he steps out at Sandown on Saturday.

Trainer David Brideoake is mindful of the weight unbeaten Interest Point must overcome at Sandown.

The tenacious Blue Point colt shaded Blue Renegade, a son of the same sire, last start at Caulfield with a 1.5kg advantage.

Interest Point has 1kg more than Blue Renegade in the return bout on Saturday.

“He was really good at Caulfield and come along nicely since then,” Brideoake said.

“The horse of Mathew Ellerton’s (Blue Renegade) and him look pretty even and … there’s a 2.5kg turnaround … so I’m not 100 per cent confident we’ve had a 3kg improvement.”

Husk, a last start Sandown winner, is a $3.80 favourite with TAB for the 1000m Two-Year-old Handicap from Cora Lynn ($4.20), Blue Renegade ($4.80) and Supercilious ($6).

Interest Point opened $6 on Wednesday.

“He was gutsy (last start) and he’s done well … that was only his second lifetime run, and I think he may have toughened up a bit,” Brideoake said.

“Fitness-wise and exposure-wise he may have improved a bit but whether he’s improved 3kg I don’t know.”

Brideoake, who trains in partnership with Matt Jenkins, said Interest Point would be spelled after Saturday to prepare for the spring.

Interest Point’s wins at Mornington and Caulfield had attracted “plenty of interest” from Hong Kong but the ownership, including Brideoake, was happy to race on.

“He’s a horse that’s given us the indication a shot the spring, some of the bigger races, might be something to look at,” Brideoake said.

“There’s been plenty of interest from Hong Kong but I’ve got a very good bunch of owners in him that have been with me a long time … and they’re happy enough with what’s going on.

“A good horse is part of what they love having and he’s fitting the bill really well … all keen to race and all had nice horses at different stages so they’re happy to race him on.”

Interest Point is a half-brother to Allibor, who was sold to Hong Kong in 2020 after success in the Group 3 Sandown Guineas (1600m).
