The Warrnambool May Carnival can throw up a few rough results and Racenet’s Brad Waters has found five candidates that could produce upsets over the three days.

Racenet form analyst Brad Waters gives his five ‘smokeys’ for this week’s three-day carnival at Warrnambool.

TUESDAY

ROLLS (Race 8 No. 5 – $26)

Rolls ran second on the first day of last year’s carnival before winning the Warrnambool Cup two days later. Trainer Maddy Raymond has clearly set him for a repeat this year, building fitness with three runs in harder affairs than Tuesday’s assignment. He hasn’t been disgraced at Flemington or Bendigo at his last two starts and grows a leg on soft or heavy ground.

WEDNESDAY

IS IT ME (Race 8 No. 16 – $15)

Is It Me will tackle the Wangoom Handicap second-up after an excellent first-up run at Bendigo. He drew poorly there but chased well when beaten less than two lengths. He’s a second-up winner and has drawn to race much closer with only 54kg on his back on Wednesday. He thrives on slow or heavy ground and might be over the odds.

IRISH ROCKSTAR (Race 10 No. 12 – $TBA)

Locally-based trainer Lindsey Smith might be looking to pull off a first-up go with Irish Rockstar. The six-year-old is a first-up winner and races well in the 1400m distance range. He’s win a couple of starts on his home track, including by seven lengths in heavy ground in July last year. His recent jumpouts indicated he’s capable of showing up fresh.

THURSDAY

MORRISSETTE (Race 5 No. 12 – $TBA)

Morrissette has only won two from 20 starts but her first-up effort at Terang was a pointer to the mare returning to somewhere near her best form. She drew terribly and closed well in an on-pacers’ race over 1606m at Terang but will relish jumping in trip on Thursday. She goes well on her home track and is capable of producing a blowout result.

FERAGO (Race 9 No. 10 – $23)

Ferago could be the one to surprise in the Warrnambool Cup. His two runs this time in have been OK in shorter races but he will improve sharply getting into the distance range of Thursday’s race. He’s had a hurdle trial to sharpen him up since and has blinkers on. He finished two lengths from the winner in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes in the spring so has the ability to produce an upset.
