Herald Sun form analyst Gilbert Gardiner runs a rule over Monday’s meeting at Benalla.
BEST BET
STORMY GREY - (R6 No. 3 - $4.40)
Finished second on debut at Benalla in April, only narrowly beaten. Would train on to win third-up over 2500m before tackling a Group 3 race in Adelaide, seventh beaten 4.4 lengths. First-up and back to Benchmark 58 company.
NEXT BEST
PRIDE OF PROISIR (Race 2 No. 1 - $2.80)
Ex-Kiwi on debut for Patrick Payne after more than 12 months off the scene. Drawn wide but has two jumpouts under the belt and Billy Egan aboard. Respect the market support.
DIRTY GRIN (Race 8 No. 8 - $2.20)
Finished strongly first-up but ultimately got too far out of his ground. Down in grade second-up and up in distance looks a winning formula.
VALUE BET
HARD PRINCE (Race 4 No. 9 - $12)
Good effort on debut at Kyneton, fifth beaten 2.2 lengths. Should improve with the rise in distance second-up.
RED VICAR (Race 5 No. 7 - $14)
Won the aforementioned Kyneton maiden at only second career start. Watch Hard Prince in Race 4 and bet accordingly.
THE JOCKEY
BILLY EGAN
LADY NEGRONI (R1 No. 10 $2.70), PRIDE OF PROISIR (R2 No. 1 $2.80), ANOTHER NEPHEW (R4 No. 8 $6), PRIVILEGED SON (R5 No. 4 $5.50) and WINGS OF SONG (R6 No. 9 $2.60).
