FIVE TO FOLLOW

MISS TARZY (unplaced, R5)
Should take a lot of improvement out of the first-up run. Enjoyed an economical steer behind the speed, jumped cleanly from barrier one and landed in the perfect spot, but not quite able to build enough revs to strike a blow in the straight. Less than a length separated second to fifth-placed Miss Tarzy, so not beaten far at all. Has won second-up previously.

CLEAN REEF (3rd, R1)
Nice debut and should not be a maiden for very long. The two-year-old filly began awkwardly and brushed I’M KENOUGH but settled quickly enough and once balanced up in the straight attacked the line with gusto. No match for the winner, none were on the day, but as the only first-starter in the field of seven, including three city winners, the Lindsay Park filly has a bright future.

CAPO STRADA (unplaced, R7)
Best work late from the tail of the field on a tough afternoon to make ground. No choice but to go back from the wide draw and spotted the leaders many lengths at the top of the straight. The ex-Godolphin galloper, second start for the Reece Goodwin stable, recorded the second fastest 600m (34.23sec) and 400m (23.42sec) in the race and equal fourth fastest last 200m sectional (12.41sec). Should improve fitness wise third-up and could appreciate a similar or slightly easier assignment at 1200m.

GREGOLIMO (unplaced, R9)
Was always going to need a bit of luck, three back the fence on straightening, and got none. Apprentice jockey Tatum Bull tried to get out approaching the 300m but could not do so, trapped between the rail and a tiring BELTORO to her outside. Got some clear air between 200m and 100m only to run up the back of DASHING, SMOKIN’ ROMANS and JIMMY THE BEAR, which forced Bull to take evasive action and basically stand up in the irons to avoid heels. Forget he went around fourth-up, a barrier trial basically.

GALERON (unplaced, R8)
Got a tow into the race behind the in-form NICOLINI VITO (2nd) so aided the cause but liked the way Galeron finished off all the same. Too bad to be true the start prior at Flemington. Beaten for early speed last Saturday and forced to settle towards the tail of the field. The imported gelding is yet to strike a blow in five Australian starts but has the European class and potential to do so.

FORGIVE

BATRANA (unplaced, R4)
Back in traffic and held up from the 500m before gaining some clear air from the 350m. One paced to the line suggested something amiss as her performance the start prior was far superior, albeit without luck. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained filly to be lame in the right foreleg. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.

HUSK (4th, R1)
Jumped fast but could not cross the field and dragged back to last, or next last, in the run with cover. Widest into the straight, balanced up but ultimately left with too much ground to make up. Never threatened but finished off well to be in a photo for third.

TRACK TALK

“She got into a lovely spot from an awkward gate, travelled well for me, ticked a lot of boxes coming into today … she put her best foot forward.” — Jockey ETHAN BROWN on MISS ROUMBINI

“We probably look to do that (give her a spell) and then bring her back towards the back end of spring and see if we can’t have a crack at some nicer races.” — Trainer KATHERINE COLEMAN on TEN DEEP

“I’m still getting plenty of rides, and only need five more winners to outride the claim.” — Apprentice jockey CELINE GAUDRAY has sights on an important career milestone.

CRUNCH TIME

ARQANA (1st, R5)
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained mare posted the fastest last 200m sectional (12.04sec) on Saturday at Sandown and appreciated a gun steer from jockey Jye McNeil.

NICOLINI VITO (2nd, R8)
Continues to race in great heart this campaign. Held up at a crucial stage in the straight but still managed to record the quickest last 400m section (23.18sec) on the day. Nicolini Vito had the fifth fastest last 600m (34.21sec) and third best final 200m (12.10sec).

CLEAN REEF (3rd, R1)
Settled last on debut but surged into contention with the quickest last 600m section (33.92sec) and second fastest last 400m (23.25sec) before a 12.22sec last 200m – the seventh fastest on the Sandown card.
