Monday Racebook: Form analyst Brad Waters gives his horses to follow or forgive from Caulfield Saturday

Queensland-bound galloper Shock ‘Em Ova produced the most impressive win of the day but punters can follow several other runners out of Saturday’s Caulfield meeting.

Rain produced a tough track for punters at Caulfield on Saturday but the meeting still produced plenty of runners to follow going into the winter season.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

TROPICUS: Sometimes the most obvious is the way to go. Tropicus was chasing a long way out and raced greenly in the home straight but just kept giving under pressure while laying in over the last 150m. It was a much better win than it initially looked and the colt is one to follow over the coming months.

CRACKERJACK PRINCE: Excellent return from this bloke. He went back from a tricky gate and found himself held up at the back of the field on the home turn. Apprentice Jaylah Kennedy switched him back towards the deteriorating inner section of the track and Crackerjack Prince closed solidly in a promising first-up run.

QUANTUM CAT: The Chris Waller-trained import is ready to win after two good efforts in Melbourne. He raced a bit closer and improved his position a little earlier this time but he stuck to his task well in the straight, chasing soundly to finish two lengths from the winner. He’ll be fitter again and looks ready to win over a bit further.

SHOCK ‘EM OVA: Another obvious inclusion in the blackbook after his win, which was the best of the Caulfield meeting. Jockey Dean Yendall patiently rode Shock ‘Em Ova to the home turn before the powerful galloper unleashed a terrific turn of foot in the straight to score easily. He’ll only be improved for that win and he’s ready to rock the Queensland carnival.

LOUNGE BAR RUBI: He usually takes a run to start his campaign but he made a good start to his winter preparation. He gave a start but made good ground in the straight despite striking traffic a couple of times in the last 200m so he should have finished closer. Lounge Bar Rubi is consistent once he strikes form so can be followed through the winter.

CRUNCH TIME

PRINCE OF HELENA made light of the deteriorating track to run the fastest last 600m of the meeting, clocking 34.93 seconds for the sectional, which included the equal second last 200m (11.71s). PLACE OF GOLD finished 11th in the last race but he matched Prince Of Helena’s last 200m time. ARQANA ran the fastest last 400m (22.83s) and last 200m (11.33s) while two-year-old TOO DARN DISCREET ran the second quickest last 600m (46.09s) and last 400m (34.97s) in an eye-catching effort in the opening race of the day.

PLEASE FORGIVE

BRIDAL WALTZ: The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Bridal Waltz led quickly and weakened as the $3.90 favourite in the opening race. However, jockey Linda Meech noted the filly got her tongue over the bit, which restricted the two-year-old’s breathing. A tongue tie could produce sharp

ELPHINSTONE: Elphinstone stepped up to the 1600m at Caulfield and did plenty wrong racing between horses in the middle stages of the race before she was struck over the nose by Hydrogen Power’s jockey at the 200m. She’s worth another chance, especially if she draws to have more galloping room.

KREMENTZ: Krementz saw plenty of the outside during a first-up run in which she saw plenty of the outside, racing wide without cover in tough conditions. Krementz had to tire in the straight, which she duly did in the last 200m. She’ll be much fitter for that and can show her real ability with a softer run.

TRACK TALK

“I’m relieved to be honest. Just wanted to get the job done for the horse and she’s been so gallant in defeat in good races,” trainer Jason Warren was thrilled to have finally notched a Group 1 win with classy mare Benedetta in Saturday’s Goodwood in Adelaide.

“I’ll have to have a look at the stewards’ footage, but yeah, a piece of magic from Blake,” Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien hailed jockey Blake Shinn’s handling of talented import Sea What I See during her latest win at Morphettville.

“The spring comes up pretty quickly, so there’s a chance we’ll put him out and aim up at a Coolmore (Stud Stakes),” co-trainer Sam Freedman said debut Caulfield winner Tropicus could be aimed at the nation’s top three-year-old sprint in the spring.
